The front door had a huge gap and flimsy locks, so I was glad it was summer. I’d booked two nights while visiting a friend, but the stay was unpleasant from the moment I walked in. The room had a strong musty odor, like it hadn’t been aired out for months. Running the AC and ceiling fan helped some, but the AC was old, loud enough to drown out the TV, and had broken vents. The bed was so firm that my back hurt. On checkout day, staff kept coming by: a desk clerk at 9:30, a tenant at 10:15, then the clerk again at 10:45, waiting outside for the key. I couldn’t wait to leave.

The new owners are clearly putting in effort, and the staff were friendly, accommodating, and went out of their way to help us more than once. We had a big trailer, but they handled that well. It’s the cheapest motel in town, right by everything, and the room was clean with doors and windows that worked. The AC worked well too. There was a musty smell when we first arrived because they leave the AC off between guests in this humid area, but once it was on, the smell faded and the room cooled nicely. They brought plenty of fresh towels each day and emptied the trash while we were out. The TV was new and working, with an HDMI connection, better than some nicer hotels we’ve stayed at. The fridge worked and had nearly enough space for food for four people for a few days, though its little freezer compartment chilled things without freezing them. The convenience store had detergent and things we might have forgotten, and there was a restaurant too. There are cute cats outside that keep rodents away. A coffee and tea shop is just one building away on the same side of the street, though it’s closed Saturdays, and the sidewalk is good.

This family-run business had friendly, accommodating people. The room was clean, and the bed was fairly comfortable. The AC wasn’t great, but with both fans on high, the temperature was comfortable enough for sleeping.

It was 19 outside, and there was no heater. The room smelled of smoke, which was especially bad with my baby and my daughter, who has bronchitis. We would’ve gone elsewhere if it hadn’t been so late, maybe even left town to find a place. The door was janky, and the guy at check-in seemed lost. He had to call his boss to confirm our reservation, and we had to wait for someone to show up before we could get in. He was pretty rude too. Save your money and sleep in your car.

At about 2:30 or 3 in the morning, I woke to someone fiddling with the doorknob, then the door opened. A woman who works there said they thought we were gone because the door was open. I told her it hadn’t been open, and that I’d locked both locks before bed. She walked away without saying anything else. Then around 7, while we were in the room laughing, she banged on the door and said we had to leave because we were fighting. We tried explaining we were laughing, but she argued with us. We said we’d leave and wouldn’t come back. The room looked like it hadn’t been rented in a long time, and I had to clean it, as I do wherever I stay. Staff need to treat guests better, clean the rooms properly, and learn the difference between laughter and an argument. Opening someone’s door in the middle of the night is dangerous. They’ll open the wrong person’s door one day. This is crazy.
