Before it was a park, this land was used as a burial ground from around 1763 to 1844. A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey by the Lamar Institute confirmed that more than 80 possible graves and burial clusters remain. Whitefield Square is Savannah's 24th and final historic square. It was laid out in 1851 and named for the Reverend George Whitefield, the well-known 18th-century British evangelist and co-founder of the Methodist movement, who arrived in Georgia in 1738. Whitefield Square is a lovely little place for a peaceful stroll, or to relax in the gazebo. It isn't very well lit at night, though it's always seemed like a pretty safe spot to me.

I enjoy all of Savannah's squares. If you visit Whitefield Square and run into Mr. Bernard, the local tour guide and historian, listen closely. He's got a lot of knowledge and history about Savannah to share.

These little one block parks tucked into neighborhoods have so much charm. This lovely park is surrounded by some of the prettiest homes.

Whitefield Square is one of Savannah's most beautiful squares, and I think everyone should visit at least once. Locals may already know this magical spot, but it's special for visitors too. For the best times of day, I'd go early at sunrise or in the evening around sunset. April-June and late August - mid-October are my favorite times of year to visit. At sunrise, sit in the Gazebo facing east. As the sun comes up, light bounces off the city's glass and gold and glitters all around you. It's hard not to start the day smiling. In summer evenings, the gazebo starts to fall into shade as the sun goes down, and fireflies begin to dance among the flowers and bushes, along with the butterflies that are always there. The sunlight catches the glass and gold again. It feels like a real fairytale moment, whether or not you believe in that sort of magic. You won't be disappointed. ❤️
