Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Schulenburg by IHG

The room was clean, and I liked the Dove products in the bathroom. Check-in was easy, the staff were nice, the fitness room had great equipment, and the continental breakfast offered lots of variety. On my last visit, we had a room with double queen beds, but the lamps by the beds didn’t work. The ironing board was small, hung from the closet clothes rod, and wouldn’t stand upright on a surface, so I had to use it flat on the bed. That’s why I gave this location 4 stars.

The hotel presented well, even with an ice storm in the area. But the breakfast was the worst I’ve had the pleasure of tasting. The eggs were overcooked microwave omelets, and the sausage links were undercooked. It felt like no one cared what was being served to guests. I was very disappointed, and told several friends who asked how things were at the express. I’ve stayed at many Holiday Inn Express locations across the United States, and I usually choose them for two things: service and rooms, and breakfast. I expected this Holiday Inn’s breakfast to meet the standards people expect from the brand, but it didn’t. That’s why I rated service low. Sorry to be so blunt, and thanks for reading. I still look forward to staying at other Holiday Inn Expresses, but this one didn’t deliver on breakfast.

Bruce came by with some delicious baked scrambled eggs, even though I’d already finished breakfast. I tried them anyway, and they were like custard! He was so friendly and kind. Thanks, Bruce! The pancake machine was the first one I’ve seen. We toured the painted Churches with Wendy as our guide. What a lovely day... .

The bathroom hardware is outdated. The tub finish was chipped, the shower head and faucet were oxidized, and the faucet water pressure was poor, though the shower pressure was fine. The refrigerator had leftover food and smelled moldy. After I asked, management came up and replaced it with a clean one. Housekeeping was obviously negligent in checking the room. I booked through the AARP Expedia website, where it had an 8.6 rating. No properties reached 9, and this was the highest-rated nearby option, even though it was 17 miles from the event venue. The hotel is in Shulenberg TX. I paid $247.47 for a Saturday night, which felt like a complete ripoff. Shulenberg TX. isn’t a major leisure or business destination, and the market feels out of control for what a hotel like this offers. I think IHG needs to inspect the property and bring it up to speed to justify that room rate.
