The room was clean and comfortable, with new furniture, a comfy bed, and friendly staff. My stay was better than I expected. I traveled alone without a car, and at first I worried it would be difficult to walk to the RIPTA bus stop. There aren’t crosswalks and there are sidewalks on only one side of the street, but I found it manageable because I’m used to suburban style roads. The main roads have several lanes, though traffic islands make crossing easier. If there weren’t a RIPTA stop near the hotel, I wouldn’t have booked. It made getting downtown to see what I wanted easy, and from downtown I took a bus to Newport. The Newport bus also passes behind the hotel, about a mile away on a parkway, so in theory you could walk to it and go straight to Newport without traveling through downtown Providence. I wanted to visit downtown before and after, so I didn’t try that. I’m comfortable walking in this kind of area and using public transit, but people who aren’t used to it, don’t walk much, or have mobility issues may find it very difficult. I left before breakfast each morning, so I can’t comment on that; I picked up McDonald’s or Dunkin’ on the way to the bus. There was a small check-in mix-up because booking . com hadn’t transferred my reservation into their system. They found it and entered it manually, and it was sorted out quickly. I’d recommend booking directly to save everyone the hassle.

For a one or two night stay, this was decent. The room smelled good and was clean, including the blankets, carpets, and bathroom. I saw no signs of bedbugs or stains, and we slept comfortably without any complaints. The front desk guy wasn’t especially welcoming at 2 a.m., but it was 2 a.m. There was a strong weed smell in the hallway, though our room itself didn’t smell at all, so that was a win.

The beds were awful and there was no breakfast, but what upset me most was the night staff member with the beard and glasses. When I asked to extend my reservation, we agreed on a new booking and price, yet he wouldn’t understand that I wanted him to make the reservation. He argued with me instead, then got even ruder when I asked to speak to someone else. He was short-tempered, hostile, combative, and argumentative. As I walked away, I heard him talking badly about me and saying he didn’t care about how confusing and difficult his service had been or how long my commute was. When I returned to confront him, he told me to get out. I said he needed to refund my money first, and he threatened not to give it back while his friend asked me questions that I answered. He said he didn’t care about me as a paying customer and wasn’t sorry for his behavior. I’m a Black woman as well. I’d stay away from this man and hotel. I emailed his manager and never heard back. Choice Hotels also never followed up with me about its supposed investigation. The property may reply here for show, but the manager ignored my email and let this happen. I don’t think the hotel will treat customers any better.

The landscaping was tidy, and my room was clean in a quiet spot at the back of the building. I stayed three nights, Monday through Wednesday. Check-in at 3 p.m. and checkout at 11 a.m. worked well for me. The breakfast buffet was really nice and ran until 9:30 a.m. I’d been looking forward to the outdoor pool, but my stay was at the end of September and beginning of October.

Twelve days later, I still haven’t gotten my $100 damage deposit back. Don’t book here. The room was dirty and hadn’t been cleaned before I was given it. There was pubic hair in the shower, and the outside microwave buttons were greasy. The carpets throughout the place reek. Yuk. Disgusting. Not worth 98.
