The sheets in the room were dirty, with a blood stain, though it was only two small drops. They weren’t changed even after I asked, but that isn’t what upset me most. I’d bought my two girls matching pendant necklaces and a small glass turtle figurine. We accidentally left them in a small blue bag next to the coffee maker when we checked out. Less than 15 minutes later, at breakfast, all three of us remembered seeing them on the table and leaving them behind. I called the front desk right away, explained what was missing, and said I’d return after breakfast. When I came back, the housekeeper said she hadn’t seen anything. The managers were nice and let me check the room myself, but it had already been cleaned. They had changed the sheets with the blood spots for the next guest, and the table where the pendants had been was spotless. The items were nowhere to be found.

Because of a late flight for a family reunion, we arrived late in the evening, during Brown University graduation when other hotels had no rooms. This place wasn’t ADA compliant, and there was no elevator to our room, so we had to haul our luggage upstairs. The room was badly worn, with little lighting, no hair dryer, and mold in the shower. It had two queen beds, but I later realized mine had used sheets when I found the TV remote under the covers. It was 11:30 at night and my husband was already asleep. I was also worried about possible bedbugs. There was only a thin blanket. It was disgusting, the worst place we’ve ever stayed, and I don’t think it should stay open. We’re leaving our suitcases in the garage until we can wash our things and fumigate.

The woman at check-in was very nice, and the lobby looked clean and attractive. The room had several problems, though: the beds were springy and squeaked, the fridge and freezer were switched off, and the air conditioning didn’t work. At least we could open the windows for cool air. The TV wasn’t plugged in, and its cord couldn’t reach the outlet, so we had to move it. There’s no elevator, and the hallway carpet was old and thin, with little or no padding.

The only things I appreciated were having a gym and warm shower water. Otherwise, the hotel was revolting, and I regret spending money there. I waited at least 12 minutes in the lobby for someone to let me into my room. After the attendant arrived with a key, I found there was no hairdryer and had to go back for another room across the hall. The bed seemed clean, but the carpet looked at least ten years old, the writing table wobbled, and the room smelled musty. There were big gaps in the ceiling tiles by the sprinkler, and around 9 p.m. I smelled cigarette smoke from the hallway. The furniture was old, peeling, and tacky. The fitness center had a couple of treadmills, an exercise bike, some free weights in a corner, and a machine for pulldowns, seated rows, shoulder presses, and a few other exercises. But there were balled-up tissues behind some equipment, and much of it looked worn, rusty, and ugly. The water dispenser stopped after about a cup and a half, so I didn’t drink the water. The lock on the back entrance was broken, meaning anyone could come in from the parking area. I didn’t feel safe. The owners don’t seem to care enough to make the place comfortable. I wouldn’t let a dog stay here.

We were there for our granddaughter’s dance competition, about two miles away. The beds were clean enough, but the furniture looked over 25 years old, scratched and worn. There wasn’t any breakfast. Amy and Carlos at Benjamin's restaurant deserve a shout-out, though, the service and food were excellent. The rear doors were broken and stayed open all night, which didn’t feel safe. Some guests seemed unfriendly, and there was trash scattered around the parking lot. The worst part was finding cockroaches in the bathroom. I’d suggest staying somewhere else and paying a little extra. If half-stars were an option, that’s what I’d give this place.
