We came from Georgia for a southbound cruise and spent a few days in Seward beforehand. This place is only 3 miles from Seward, and we were very happy with our stay. Todd, the owner, was so friendly and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. Our upstairs room was in a building behind the main lodge. It was clean and comfortable, with the Salmon Bake restaurant right next to the lodge. We were told it was the best place to eat, and it lived up to that. Dinner was wonderful each night, and it was full every evening. At breakfast, Todd asked the night before what time we'd like to eat and offered three or four choices. He cooked it himself in the lodge, where there was a dining room to sit with coffee while we waited. Everything we had was delicious and cooked just right. Exit Glacier is only a short drive away. We were pleased with everything and would definitely stay again.

Getting around without a car was the biggest challenge. I needed to reach Seward for a boat tour, and a taxi I’d booked ahead still hadn’t arrived 20 minutes after the agreed time. Another guest kindly drove me into town, though I normally wouldn’t accept a ride from someone I didn’t know. The lodge itself was good and my room was nice. There were a couple of communication hiccups. I wasn’t told before arrival about the room upgrade, which got my stay off to a bad start. The next morning I spoke with the manager, heard his explanation, and realized I’d judged the situation too quickly. He offered to move me to the cabin, but with just one night left I declined because I didn’t want to inconvenience him. I was also told breakfast would be available, but other guests explained I needed to order it well ahead of time. The manager made me breakfast anyway, which I appreciated, though I felt bad since I hadn’t been given the full information at check-in. It turned out breakfast cost extra, something I could have asked about. What I got was good value. If you stay here without a car, bear in mind that getting into Seward, where you may need to go for things, can be difficult.

We found this historic, old-fashioned hotel unexpectedly when we needed a place for one night in Seward. It’s a few minutes’ drive from town, and the personal service was very good for the price. Our loft was roomy and comfortable, with a queen bed downstairs and three twin beds in the upstairs loft. Breakfast is served in a small area by the lobby, and the choices looked appealing. There’s also a full restaurant attached.

The room’s washer and dryer were a really nice surprise, and the location was quiet. The Loft worked well for our family: the kids had three beds in the fun upstairs space, while mom and dad had a private room downstairs. I did try to take a pleasant walk in the afternoon, but a neighbor with dogs yelled that I was trespassing and chased me off. That was upsetting, especially since the signs clearly say no trespassing except for residents and guests. Too bad an angry, ignorant person tried to spoil things for others.

Todd and Madison made us feel very welcome, and we had a great stay at the lodge. Breakfast was great too. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Seward, AK.
