Joe and Melissa were attentive hosts who made sure we were comfortable, and we slept peacefully. As bed and breakfast owners ourselves, we enjoy visiting places that do things well, and we had a wonderful stay at the Thomas Shepard Inn. Its location made exploring what Shepardstown has to offer easy. Inside, the historical restoration is stunning, with modern comforts too. Our time away was a much-needed recharge. Thank you, Joe and Melissa, for keeping this gem going all these years!

I was so touched by Melissa and Joe's generosity, and I still am. They treated me to a private breakfast at MJ's on one of my last mornings, and I was glad to spend more time getting to know them. They're every bit as charming, delightful, and fascinating as the area, and simply put, extremely cool people. Their housekeeper and collaborator, Claudia, was an absolute ray of sunshine when I met her. I spent four nights here by myself, without a car, and had the absolute BEST time. Since I arrived on odd days, I was the only guest throughout my visit. From the moment I arrived, Melissa and Joe communicated proactively and offered whatever I might need, from a fluffy robe to a giant umbrella for a rainy afternoon. Melissa texted each day about breakfast plans, so snacks and fresh fruit could be ready if I wanted them. Joe spent several hours giving me a walking tour of Shepherdstown one day and nearby Antietam the next. Those were definite highlights, and I learned so much about the area's history and what makes it special today. Every shop and restaurant I saw was locally owned and run, and everyone I spoke with was warm and kind. Joe suggested a different restaurant for each meal, and they were all phenomenal. I lean vegan, so I was surprised and delighted by the range of tasty vegetarian and vegan food in Shepherdstown. Bistro 112 is especially worth considering for anyone with dietary restrictions who wants a decadent, thoughtfully crafted meal. MJ's has similarly accessible menu options in a homier diner setting. The inn itself is clean, beautiful, and full of local history, with antique elegance alongside modern convenience. You can tell each part of the space has been cared for. It feels comfortable and relaxed in a way you don't get at a dime-a-dozen hotel chain. If you want to switch off and watch TV, look elsewhere. If you'd rather relax with a glass of sherry in good company by a beautiful hearth, this is the place. Even after all these words, I feel like I've barely expressed how much I appreciated my stay. The Thomas Shepherd Inn is special, and if I return to the area, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. You'll regret only that your visit has to end.

The Inn's interior was stunning, and the hospitality was good. I stayed with a friend during the Fall Escape Bike ride organized by Bike Virginia. We couldn't have breakfast because it was served too late for us. The soap and shampoo also came in tiny bottles, with just one of each for the two of us to share.

We had a great stay just days before Halloween. Joe and Melissa were such friendly hosts and gave us great recommendations. The town was fun at Halloween, and we'd definitely come back.

The beds were really comfortable, and the historic property is beautifully maintained. The innkeepers are very nice, with thoughtful details throughout, like earplugs for light sleepers. We weren't bothered by it, but there's a four-way stop right outside, so cars are constantly stopping and starting. The double-paned windows keep most of the noise muted. Downstairs, there's a simple breakfast of fruit and yogurt, or you can walk a couple of blocks for a nice full cooked breakfast.
