The Checkered Moose Inn

Breakfast had plenty to choose from, including fruit, cereal, baked treats, jams, and good coffee with cream. The rates were very reasonable, too. We’d hoped to stay near Cooperstown, and were glad The Checkered Moose had a room available. Our big king bedroom and bath were cozy and nicely appointed. The Inn has been remodeled and feels comfortable and lovely, and the staff were so friendly and hospitable that we felt right at home.

The rooms felt quite small. Once our guests had opened their luggage, there was hardly space to move around the beds, so unfortunately we won’t recommend the Inn again, even though we like supporting local businesses. We had a reunion at our home in Sherburne, and our 11 guests filled every room at the Inn. Before they arrived, my husband checked the rooms and talked with the owner about breakfast. Several things went wrong. The website showed no availability, but after calling the Inn our guests learned rooms were open. It also promised complimentary breakfast, but each day there were only the same mini muffins and bagels, left out overnight. The small selection put everyone off, and they chose to eat at the local diner each morning. The owner had told my husband she’d provide quiche or bacon and eggs for the weekend, but that didn’t happen.

Some rooms are on the small side, and we understand that. That’s part of their charm. Compared with a typical B & B, they also have WiFi, a flat screen TV, and a private bathroom. Guests can help themselves to fresh fruit, different cereals, yogurts, and coffee and tea throughout the day. Gluten-free and dairy-free items are available on request before arrival. Looks can be deceiving! We stayed one night and felt right at home. The rooms were clean, and there was great coffee and a range of breakfast items in the morning. Shiela was the greatest hostess, so accommodating.
