Historic Victorian Inn

The biggest issue for me was sleep. The functional part of the bed didn't meet the standard I expect from an overnight stay, especially with so much money required upfront. I might stay once just to say I'd slept in a beautiful Victorian house, but I wouldn't come back. The place looked good and the service was good, yet getting a decent night's sleep is the main point of staying overnight, so this is a negative review. The house is beautiful inside and out, and its age comes through in the details. There seemed to be lovely antique furniture, and the proprietor brought out the house's character without making the modern amenities the focus. Even the props added something. Walking through it was a pleasure, like visiting a beautiful museum. The proprietor was patient when I didn't understand how the locks worked, and responded when I said the room was very warm. I think he may even have been there when I said I would arrive, though we chose a different movie, supper ran late, and so did we. We also accidentally left our coffee mugs in the room instead of washing them in the kitchen. I apologized, and he said it was fine. Once you get through the paperwork, they give you a fair amount of freedom and are easy to work with. I was uneasy about the sizable required deposit. I understand protecting the property, but some of the requirements felt excessive. I've rarely had to provide details for the people staying with me, and the proprietor actually contacted them, which upset me. The documents seemed heavy-handed. I was the signatory and responsible for my guest, so I didn't like a business requiring my guest's contact information. My girlfriend is from the Sioux Falls area and told me downtown Sioux Falls is apparently a rough part of town. Maybe that's why there are so many requirements and so much red tape. I hadn't known it was a bad area when I booked. I parked on the street out front, which may have invited trouble, since there were no other cars on the street or in the adjacent lot when I arrived. The instructions said parking was available behind the house, but at night, driving through the alley, it was hard to tell which driveway belonged to which house. That's why I parked out front. My car was still there in perfect shape the next morning, so perhaps her concern was an overreaction. The house numbers weren't lit, and all the homes seemed to have their outdoor lights on, making it hard to identify the right one. I had to check a photo of the house because my GPS wasn't enough.
