Quality Inn

The desk employees were wonderful, but the hotel itself was terrible. Our group was there for the USS Mass. final reunion, and many of the ship’s crewmembers were in their late 80s or 90s. There are no elevators, which was a real problem. The dated look didn’t bother me much, but the lack of cleanliness was awful and felt like a health hazard. We ran out of towels in our rooms on two of the three days, and there were no pool towels. The room lamps didn’t work; I couldn’t tell if it was an electrical issue or simply bulbs that needed replacing. Even though our room was non-smoking, the whole place smelled of cigarettes. I’ll miss future reunions, but I won’t miss staying at the Quality Inn in Somerset, MA.

I stopped staying here after I learned they housed low-income individuals. The one good thing was the front desk staff, who were pleasant and attractive. Before that, every stay had problems, and I was comped each time. There was dust everywhere, stained hallway and room carpets, cigarette burns on the bedding and lampshades, and a musty, damp smell. Once the panel under the bathroom sink fell over, revealing used syringes inside, apparently left by local crack users. There was also mold in the bathrooms. I switched to the Holiday Inn five minutes away, which is cleaner and better managed.

We spent four days here with our pet and would come back. The room was decent for the price, with two beds on the ground floor and a river view. We got a discounted military rate, and even though we booked without notice, the girl was so nice and helped us quickly while we were still driving in. We’ve stayed at hotels in Portsmouth and Newport, some good and some not so good, and this place compares well. There’s a great bar and restaurant next door. Try their pizza or nachos. If you’re traveling with pets, this is a great choice.

The noise from the people above us opening and closing their sliding door kept us up, and we had a terrible night’s sleep. At 11:30 p.m., water started pouring through the bathroom ceiling vent. I called to complain, but since it was so late, I didn’t ask to move rooms. The room was in very poor condition, with an odor and burn holes in the furniture and bed. I also found pills, a pipe, and someone’s clothes in the drawers, which made it seem like the room hadn’t been properly checked or cleaned. At checkout I mentioned all of this, hoping for a discount, but still paid full price. Very disappointing.
