(This is Joe's wife writing this review.) We came across the Barretta Gardens Inn the day before Thanksgiving, and I’m so glad we did. Daniel and Astrid are kind owners who clearly care about their guests. Astrid even adjusted breakfast for my husband’s food allergies, and the meal was delicious and beautifully presented. We had coffee and tea waiting in the sitting room outside our suite when we woke up. The inn has a peaceful, old-fashioned feel, with elegant antiques and lovely little sitting rooms where you can enjoy tea and fresh cookies. Our bedroom was private, clean, and comfortable, with thoughtful touches like chocolates, lotions, an antique mirror, and tucked-away books and games. Outside, there’s a manicured garden with quiet spots to sit, plus a multi-level fountain and pond with koi. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily come back.

Astrid and Daniel made us feel completely at home with their warm, friendly hospitality. The gardens were lovely, even in January, and the inn is both central to Sonora and the surrounding area and still feels tucked away. Our room was luxurious, with Victorian-era furniture and a beautiful bathroom. Breakfast was a wonderful start to the day, and Astrid and Daniel can point you toward plenty of things to do and enjoy nearby. We’ll return as soon as we can.

Astrid is a gem, both for her scrumptious breakfasts and all her local knowledge about places to eat and things to do. We stayed at the Barretta Gardens Inn in mid-February and loved its authentic Victorian feel. The rooms and grounds are beautiful, and we plan to stay again.

I spent 10 months at the Barretta Gardens Inn while working as a traveling doctor at Adventist Health. It felt like a home, and the hospitality was wonderful. The place has a distinctive Swedish character and is very clean. I especially enjoyed the fresh fruit Astrid shops around for each morning, and the coffee was good too, which says a lot after 10 months. The extensive gardens are beautiful and relaxing, with a koi pond and nice private spots. Downtown is an easy walk.

Astrid is kind, attentive, and easy to talk with. She has plenty of stories, excellent suggestions for local restaurants, and brochures in the living room if you want ideas for activities. Check-in was simple, and we were welcomed with tea and tasty oatmeal raisin cookies. Coffee, cream, sugar, and cups were set outside our room early in the morning. We quietly brought them inside after waking, then got ready for breakfast at 9 in the dining room. The meal was balanced and delicious, well beyond a typical continental or basic American breakfast. My boyfriend and I stayed in the Tempranillo suite for a weekend away from the Bay Area. The decorations and whirlpool tub in the en suite bathroom made it feel romantic. The room stayed comfortable, the bed was warm, and there were toiletries and soft robes. It was a pleasant surprise how clean everything was compared with other B&Bs I’ve visited, since both of us are sensitive to dust and animal dander. I’d make an effort to stay here again.
