DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland

The stay was unsanitary, stressful, and far below what I expected from Hilton. The room was disturbing from the start: hair filled the bathtub, there seemed to be blood stains near the tub base and door, and the shower had a strong damp, mildew smell. The toilet seat was broken, and there was no shower gel, shampoo, or conditioner. I reported everything right away and offered to send photos, but the response didn’t have the urgency or professionalism I’d expect from a Hilton property. I asked for housekeeping for THREE days in a row and still didn’t get a proper cleaning. I also requested a king bed and wasn’t accommodated. The front desk associate I dealt with was hostile and dismissive instead of trying to help. This points to serious problems with housekeeping, room inspections, guest service, and management oversight. Based on my experience and conversations with the management team, I strongly believe housekeeping standards need immediate review and accountability. I asked to speak directly with the General Manager about how badly the stay was handled, but never got a call back.

Parking after 9 pm can be awful, especially when events are going on in the ballrooms. With so many guests and event attendees, finding a spot can be a challenge. That was my main issue here. The location is convenient for restaurants, shopping, activities, and the Portland waterfront, which is 20 minutes away or less. The price felt right for the area. My room and bathroom were clean, though the air seemed a little wonky at times. There’s an indoor pool, a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a popular bar. They also have conference rooms, and there seemed to be an event nearly every night we were there.

The room smelled like old dirty socks, there was a big red stain on the carpet, and we only had towels for two even though there were four of us. The lobby and pool were packed and incredibly loud, with lots of screaming and obnoxious behavior. We managed only 10-15 minutes of swimming because teenagers and adults were overwhelming the little kids and showing no social awareness. Later, while picking up food through DoorDash because we couldn’t leave and didn’t want the restaurant menu, my daughter and I smelled a very strong odor of weed in the lobby, right off the elevator. We’d booked locally for a cabin fever break and a swim with the kids, but couldn’t find parking when we arrived. We didn’t know a huge dart tournament was on. Check-in was slow too: the woman handling us stopped to talk with four or five other people, even though their issues had nothing to do with her. We asked for a refund because we weren’t okay with the environment and were told no. They did find us a parking spot, but that meant we were stuck at the hotel because leaving could cost us the spot. It was a terrible trip, and we won’t be back.

We had a nice, quick stay. After I left something behind, I made several calls, and Stephanie was the only person who went out of her way to help. She was kind, gave me great service, and found what I was looking for. She deserves all the praise and a raise. Thanks to her for caring about the quality of service at this hotel!
