The Shire Woodstock

The location was great, within walking distance of the main shops and cafes, and they let us check in early. Beyond that, our stay at the shire was pretty mediocre. Our Cape building room cost almost $400 a night and had little privacy, looking straight out at two parking lots. The shower door was broken or missing, and a curtain took its place but let water flood the bathroom. The pillows were uncomfortable and not enough for the king bed. There was no water in the room, and we weren't told about any filters. For that price there were few amenities, no lobby or exercise area, for example. Staff communication was poor and nobody oriented us to the room or property.

The staff were kind, apologized for the mix-up, and gave us a discount. We still had a great stay, with a beautifully decorated room and a flower, note, and cookies for our 25th anniversary. The grounds were lovely, and we enjoyed the fire pits and river. The location is superb, walkable to all of Woodstock, with a coffee machine just down the hall. We'd booked a “premium river view King room with balcony or patio” on the website and requested the second floor after hearing that people often walked by first-floor rooms. At check-in we got what seemed to me a partial or side view room without a balcony, and they were fully booked so we couldn't switch. If a specific feature like a balcony matters, call to confirm after booking.

The balcony views were a winter wonderland to wake up to, and the location was perfect. Parking was easy and always available, and the staff were incredibly kind. My wife and I felt like we were in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Dave, the owner, and his staff went out in the cold and patched my flat tire so we could drive safely. I had only gone outside to check it, and their help saved the trip from being spoiled. The people in this town are truly special. What an amazing place.

They made arriving late easy, with clear instructions for getting into our room. It was clean and comfortable, and the fireplace was already going when we walked in, a nice touch on a cold night. Affordable, with a great location and staff. It’s an ideal place to stay for skiing Killington, and my new go-to spot in Vermont. Can’t recommend it enough!
