I’m 57, so I see it differently than someone in their 20s. I liked this place much more than Moxie. There’s no actual closet, but there’s a bar for hanging clothes, not just pegs on the wall. It has pegs too, enough for a suit or long dresses, and there’s a bathroom door. Odd things to appreciate, but both points put Tru ahead for me. The pool is tiny, but at least there’s one next to the weight room. Room service comes from a restaurant on the ground floor. The employees I spoke with were nice enough, but nobody told me about the side entrance or that the desk is on the 3rd floor. I was surprised there weren’t signs pointing to the front doors or check-in. Other hotels with this layout have valet attendants point you the right way. Be prepared for noise. Cars blasting stereos and cars with modified or no mufflers kept me up until midnight. I’d booked because it was near the Trop for an early morning graduation. I don’t know why St Pete PD isn’t writing tickets, but a ton of cars were making way too much noise.
The staff at this location were extremely welcoming. Every employee greeted us as we passed, including the maintenance staff. My wife and I like Tru hotels and try to book them when they’re in places we’re visiting. We liked the comfortable beds, bright lighting options, and large TV, which lets you sign in to popular streaming services, watch cable, or connect your own HDMI device. We also appreciate the water refill stations for our reusable bottles. My one complaint is that there’s no microwave. Also, parking isn’t free. You can pay for valet for the whole stay or pay daily at a nearby lot. It may have been mentioned in the reviews and I missed it, but I wasn’t expecting the extra cost.
We had a great time at Tru by Hilton St. Petersburg Downtown Central Ave. It’s right in the middle of downtown at 20 17th St S, near Central Avenue at the corner of the Grand Central and Edge Districts. We could walk to restaurants, bars, craft breweries, shops, the Dali, Jannus Live, Mahaffey Theater, and Tropicana Field. The surrounding streets have that artsy St. Pete feel, with plenty of live music, craft beer, and places to hang out outside. It’s a lively base for events, happy hours, or just wandering around. The rooms are clean and sleek, with comfortable beds and good AC. The lobby has games and work spaces, and feels like a social hangout. Breakfast is free, hot, plentiful, and a solid start to the day, with fresh options, coffee, and fruit available all day. The staff were friendly and attentive, and check-in was smooth. There’s also a rooftop hangout, a small pool, a gym, and shuttle service to nearby places. The hotel’s fresh, youthful Tru style suits the area. It has strong ratings across review sites, with around 4.4/5 on TripAdvisor and 8.5-9.0 on Booking.com and Expedia. People consistently praise the cleanliness, comfort, and downtown location. Some may find the rooms compact, and valet parking costs extra, which is common here. The value and easy access to downtown make it a winner. I’d recommend it to couples, groups, or solo travelers looking to get into the action, and can’t wait to go back.
I was in downtown St Petersburg recently for a trip and some Rays Baseball, and this was the better of the two hotels I tried. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable, and the AC was easy to adjust and responded quickly. Tropicana Field is a very short walk away, with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby to make the stay more enjoyable. I’d recommend it 100% and will definitely be back.
The location works especially well if you’re a Rays fan going to a game the Ray's won. We’ve stayed here twice. The room was nice, and Campbell park is a good place to jog, though the route back over the freeway on a jogging path feels kind of spooky. Valet parking is a major problem at $40 a night. Clearly the building was made incorrectly. The Oj was watered down, and there was no biscuits and gravy. The pool was only about six inches deep, and diving isn’t allowed.
