Later in the night we found bed bugs, after seeing two water bugs, five stink bugs at the window, and stains on the sheets. The room door was broken and scraped the floor, and the picture had been pulled off the wall and set up like a headboard. The pool had so much chlorine that my eyes burned at check-in. The rooms have lots of bed bugs. For $55, Royal Inn or Four keys has the same bugs and people.

The lobby and breakfast room were the best parts. The check-in employee was professional and friendly, and Rebecca, who handled the hot breakfast supplies the next morning, was friendly and tried to make sure guests had what they needed. Our TV worked fine, too. But the room and building felt sketchy, and I won't return. Room 217 had a bathroom door that was busted, with its knob hanging off. The couch in the sitting area shown online was dirty, sagging, and ready for the dump; the tabletop had bubbled marble-pattern contact paper. The windows were permanently fogged, stink bugs were alive in the room, and splatters on the walls and elsewhere made me wonder what they were. There were so many holes in the doors and walls I stopped counting. The carpets in the halls were dirty, and the edges of the flooring and baseboards looked like they hadn't been cleaned carefully. A bent metal strip where tile met laminate could catch someone's foot. The same flooring across that area would have made more sense. Outside, some AC unit covers were off and curtains on many windows weren't attached to their rods. On the first and second floors, many doors were held unlocked with the metal lock flipped, so people could go between rooms. We saw men in various states of dress. The hall felt like a teenage dorm. Noise carried all night: banging, footsteps, a crying baby, and what sounded like someone upstairs dribbling a basketball for about an hour. I haven't encountered the kind of guests I expect at a hotel. The internet wasn't worth calling internet access. The price was in line with other local hotels, but I don't think any of them deserve what they charge. We stay in many hotels each year, and the Portsmouth ones, including this one, are bottom of the barrel. In most, even the workers seem sketchy, and it makes me wonder if the hotels are used for less-honorable things like drugs or trafficking. Wake up, Portsmouth hotels. What you allow has driven decent guests out of town. Is that what you want? I've had to drive to Wheelersburg for family events because I don't trust the hotels here to be decent and safe. Sometimes that means a longer drive after dark and back again the next day. A good chain hotel with real standards would mean a lot and could do well here. Traveling guests would appreciate it. This hotel isn't that. What a shame.

The food was horrible, with no fruit or anything fresh. The milk had been sitting out for hours with stale cereal. The place was disgusting. A cockroach greeted my sister when she opened her door, and she left, though we didn't realize that for about an hour, when we finally arrived. My room smelled like glue and pickles, and there was blood on my blanket. The sink was clogged, so we had to brush our teeth using the bathtub. The heater was stuck at 80. There was puke in the bathroom sink by the pool, and I'm pretty sure a girl was selling her, you know, in the parking lot. HORRIBLE.

I usually come on weekends because it's so quiet, and last time Beck and Jamie were really helpful. The staff care about how guests feel, the place looks amazing, and the view was great. Breakfast was just okay, but for the price it's the best hotel!

The bed smelled like weed, the pillows were tiny squares, and the walls were thin. In the shower frame there was a hole with fiberglass visible underneath. My expectations were already low, but I was still blown away in the worst way.
