We had a nice, quiet stay, and parking was easy. Summerland is affordable compared with Santa Barbra, just 2 miles up the road. It felt like a B&B without breakfast. My wife asked for an iron and board and a hair dryer, and the woman kindly brought them. The bed was really firm, but we had full cable with HBO and all the trimmings. We’ll come back.

We found a vacancy at the last minute over Labor Day weekend, but this wouldn’t be among my top 10 choices. The place has an antique cottage feel, though the rooms and bathrooms are dark, and there was mold in several spots in the bathroom. Above the bed in our room, water damage on the ceiling looked hastily patched and hadn’t been painted over. It has potential as a B&B, but there’s no breakfast.

Mei was nowhere around during our stay, though she apparently checks guests in and then leaves. When we left, I expected a receipt, but was told over the phone, in words I had trouble understanding, “no receipt!” Mei doesn’t speak English very well. I’d also expected breakfast, but was told, “No breakfast!” The morning coffee was instant from a jar. The bathroom had mold, there was a rat on the premises, and the mattress was the oldest and worst I’ve ever had. I expected a clean, comfortable place and was very disappointed. It was an unpleasant stay, especially since this could have been such a nice B&B. It needs better management and updating. The low fees don’t make it worth it. You get what you pay for.

We waited 30 minutes for check-in because the owner wasn’t there, and it was hard to understand her since she hardly spoke English. Later, someone used a key to unlock our door while looking for their own room. The shower water leaked into the room downstairs, so our water was shut off. We tried calling the owner several times about it, but she never communicated with us. There was mold in the bathroom, and some of the towels and sheets had stains.

The sheets were clean, and the location right by the freeway was convenient, but the place was noisy, dusty, and outdated, and overall not very clean. Dust had collected along the carpet edges. In the first room we looked at, there were dark water stains on the ceiling. The bolt and handle lock didn’t line up with the door frame, which made the door difficult to lock. I won’t stay here again.
