Comfort Suites Sumter near Shaw AFB

A roach on the bathroom counter was enough for me to gather my things and leave after only about ten minutes. I told the front desk woman I wasn't comfortable staying, and she apologized. I'd also seen another review mention bugs in the bathroom, so this may not be a one-off. The location on Broad Street is convenient, and the woman who checked me out was one of the reasons I gave it two stars. The room itself looked old throughout, with dingy carpet and dated furniture, though I could have put up with that for two nights. The elevator had cardboard lining during what seemed to be renovations, and the light above the door across from my room flickered. The lobby and breakfast area had looked decent, and check-in itself went fine, though the woman counting money at the desk didn't greet me or the two men behind me and asked another employee to start checking people in. I came for a family event after reading mixed reviews, and wish I'd chosen another hotel. The price doesn't match the condition, and there are cleaner, updated options nearby, even if they cost a little more.

GM Shonda made our stay better than any other hotel experience we've had. The staff were all friendly and efficient, and our room was immaculate and in excellent shape. Breakfast and coffee were fresh every day.

Parking is tight here, but I would come back. Our room was quiet, the continental breakfast had plenty, and although remodeling was going on, we never heard the work.

We came from Ohio to drop our son off at college and hoped for a nice weekend away, but the stay was a waste of money. We paid $158 and had no hot water or working outlets in the second room, no window curtains, cracks in the shower, a musty smell and poor furniture. The pool wasn't working either. We had to change rooms because of the smell and furniture, and when the front desk tried to help, the manager said we could check out but would still be charged. I'm assuming this was Shonda, based on other negative reviews online. We booked here using our rewards and were very disappointed. We'll use one of the many hotels down the street next time.
