Francisco went out of his way to help me get to the KOA campground, five miles from the hotel, and back. There wasn’t hotel transportation, and Uber wasn’t available in this rural area. I was in town May 1-3 for the Fallout Fan experience. Emily, the owner, was very attentive. I stayed on the second floor of the carriage house. There’s no elevator, so let them know if you have a disability. My room and the shower were clean, the water pressure was fine, and I saw no mildew. I did notice a cracked electrical plate. Sutton has little to do beyond the Bigfoot Museum and the Flatwood Monster Museum, which offer a good introduction to the local folklore. I believe the Braxton Bistro is the town’s only restaurant. The cheeseburger was average, while the ribs were above average. Across from the bistro, a metal sculptor has some really nice work in the window and a life-size piece on the sidewalk. I would’ve liked to meet him, but he wasn’t there and there was no business contact information on the door.

The location made getting around historic downtown Sutton easy, and even with Wasteland Jamboree traffic we had no trouble parking. We were glad we picked it over the Days Inn or an Airbnb. The bar is in the basement of the main building facing the river, and it’s the only place in downtown Sutton with a liquor license. They had lots of local craft beers, and the bartenders, including the Hufflepuff, could make whatever cocktail we asked for. They’d even done it up with a Fallout theme. My wife booked us a glamping dome tent, and it was much better than I expected: roomy and clean, with a kitchen area, bathroom, great skylight, and a view of the river when you open about half the dome. The bathroom wall doesn’t reach the ceiling, but, well, it’s a tent. The main area stayed comfortable, while the bathroom was much colder after a freezing night. You can hear things outside, as you’d expect in a tent, but even with the grounds full of campers, people respected quiet hours. We slept and relaxed just fine, and the property felt private. Staff were friendly and helpful. A local ghost tour group starts from the front steps, and Duke the Cat is a bit of a ham if you’re into little orange cats. It’s a gem of a place. We may come back in the fall just to sit by the river.

The two staff members I met were wonderful. On my first day, Francisco cleared the snow off my car after I asked for an ice scraper. I was looking for a central spot in WV to explore during a weeklong vacation, and Braxton county worked out really well. It was offseason, so the prices were great. The place combines a historic house, side houses, and glamping domes. It was an easy place to head out from for day trips and return to for a quiet night.

Breakfast was included from 8:30 to 10, but when I arrived at 8:45 they were out of eggs and other things. I got a slice of toast and bacon that was raw. I’d requested a wheelchair-accessible room with shower grab bars and didn’t get one. There was a bug in the shower stall, only a hardback chair, and a very musty smell. Worst experience ever.

The River Suite was spacious enough for all five of us, and the price was very affordable. What stood out most was how clean it was. The AC was clean and worked perfectly, and the whole place felt fresh and well cared for. It’s hard to find comfort, space, cleanliness, and a good price all together, but this suite had them. My family and I were so glad we found it. A perfect 10/10 stay! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
