Courtyard by Marriott Newport News Yorktown

I only needed a place to sleep before heading to my destination, so I was glad the stay was brief. The rooms have gotten shabby, and the corners were horrible, which made me wonder how much care the cleaning staff put in. I’d said a year ago that this hotel needed a facelift, and it still does. It’ll be a while before I come back. I’ll choose another Marriott property next time.

The location is great, with several restaurants close by, and the service was good. I managed three nights over the holidays, but the hotel felt rough and overdue for a refurbishment. There was trash in the parking lot and in my room, plus a lot of smaller problems: shampoo dispensers that weren’t mounted properly, weak sink water pressure, and cosmetic damage throughout. As a Titanium member who’s stayed at many Courtyards, this was among the roughest. It didn’t feel up to the brand, and I don’t think I’ll return.

The staff were nice, but the second floor smelled like weed, and a party went on until 2 a.m. the first night. The room was dirty, too. I won’t stay here again.

I left and booked another Courtyard. This was one of the worst Marriott stays I’ve had. The room smelled moldy and was filthy, and when we asked to change rooms, it felt like we had to beg for them to grant the request. The other Courtyard by the airport was clean and didn’t have that smell. The shower in the photos hadn’t been cleaned properly in a long time. There was rust in one corner, as if the room had flooded, and the floorboards were rising from the foundation.
