The staff were kind and quick to move us when the first room’s AC wouldn’t work, and the second room was clean enough. Still, I’d only come back if I had no other choice. The replacement AC kept shutting off because it wrongly read the room as 45 degrees, even though it felt closer to 80. It made for a miserable night, like trying to sleep in a tent at 85 degrees. The rooms felt worn and not properly maintained: there was construction residue on the tub, dusty loose light fixtures, and lights that didn’t work in either room. The noise was bad too, especially traffic outside at night. Getting ice meant going from the broken machine on the third floor to a broken one on the second, then down to the first. The elevator felt creaky and slow, breakfast was poor, and there was no direct street access to the hotel parking lot. The staff said goodbye when we left.

We weren’t impressed. The room let in noise, with people talking in the hall until around midnight and footsteps from upstairs the next morning. There was white residue around the tub drain, and the paint by the shower fixture was peeling off the sheetrock. At check-in we waited at least five minutes for anyone to come to the desk. A sign said they were helping other guests, and it was still there when we returned from dinner hours later and again after that. It seemed the guy was working somewhere else.

The bathroom was a mess: the toilet water was unusually high, and a test flush made it back up. We asked to move, but were told there were no rooms. A staff member spent over 20 minutes trying to fix it without success. Meanwhile the heater came back on by itself, the room got hotter, and the AC wouldn’t run. When I finally switched it to AC mode, it quit within minutes. The first room was already blazing hot, with the heater set to 84°F despite it being about 60°F outside. The window was stuck, and the AC wasn’t working right. On arrival nobody was at the desk for quite a while. Then our first key card failed, and we were told the doors and readers were broken, so we’d need a new card every time we left. A manager eventually came up in casual clothes, tried the AC for a couple seconds, saw the screen light up, and said condescendingly, “It works.” I’d already tried troubleshooting; he was rude and dismissive, and came across as having a clear attitude that women can’t fix things. When I asked for a refund, he got angrier, walked out without a word, and I never saw him again. We’d been told there were no other rooms, but after we packed and started leaving, another room suddenly appeared. It was late, so finding another hotel wasn’t realistic, and the new room was no cleaner. The walls are thin, so hallway and neighboring room sounds carry, and housekeeping was banging on doors and running vacuums at 8 a.m. We were woken early. I’d never stay again and would tell people to avoid this place. Even a car might be cleaner and more comfortable.

So far it’s been good, and the room is nice. The only trouble is the sink water got hot enough for shaving, but the shower only got warm.

We only stayed because we had nowhere else to go. I don’t think the room had been cleaned: there were dead spiders in our bed, and I felt things crawling on me. I checked for bed bugs before settling in, and it wasn’t bed bugs. The water was cold, and there was a strong weed smell around the front desk, like it was lingering from a room. I think the smell outside may have come from someone smoking outdoors, but the smell by the desk was much stronger. When I told the front desk guy about the dead spiders, he wrote it down but talked down to me, as if I didn’t know weed smoking was legal outside. Talking to him was a waste of time; I should have called the main office. I won’t stay at this location again, and maybe not at any other Best Western either. The picture is of the dead spider I found while looking for my spouse’s socks.
