The weekend breakfast was delicious, and it was nice lingering over all the paintings in the two dining spaces. LA Dona Luz Inn is close enough to leave the car parked for free and walk to the Plaza, restaurants, galleries, and museums. The place feels like a museum, with eight distinct rooms full of antique weavings, pueblo pottery, carved Katsinas, and work by New Mexico artists. Some rooms have corner fireplaces, and the rooms open onto either a geranium-filled courtyard or rooftop views of town, mountains, and sky. Folk art brightens the kitchen cabinets and many of the doors. Paul, “Paco”, Castillo has run and cared for this historic inn for more than 30 years. He’s also returned to making jewelry after setting it aside for 25 years to raise his two sons and run the Inn. Ask about his silver rings with special turquoise stones, and maybe he’ll have one of his striking cuff bracelets to show. Staying here was a real highlight of my time in Taos, and I’m longing to return. I’m sure others would find it remarkable too.

Our three nights in the La Luz room, right at the top of a spiral staircase, were among the most pleasant stays I can remember after many years of living and working abroad and countless nights in hotels, inns, and B&Bs. Paco Martinez has clearly put a lot of himself into the varied rooms and shared spaces, and the New Mexican breakfasts served on weekends are a lovely way to experience Taos. The inn is a short walk from the main plaza, restaurants, galleries, museums, and historic homes. I highly recommend Dona Luz Inn for a Taos visit.

For our five nights in Taos, La Dona Luz was ideally located, with restaurants we wanted to try within walking distance. Paco and the staff were so welcoming and friendly that we felt right at home. We especially loved the homemade huevos rancheros the staff served for weekend breakfast. We’d stay again in a heartbeat.

On our ten-day trip around NM, La Dona Luz was the place my mom, brother, and I liked best, and we all wished we’d booked more time there. The house is beautiful, with art and woodwork everywhere, and we enjoyed just wandering around to look at it all. Paco is friendly and knows a ton about Taos. We’d come back in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone.

Such memorable rooms, with the host’s touch all over the place. The inn is open and welcoming, and it’s an easy walk to the Plaza, restaurants, and art galleries at every turn, plus amazing historic sites nearby. The host was delightful and the staff remarkable. Weekend breakfasts were homemade and wonderful. At last, I know what’s over the rainbow.
