The pool and hot tub were probably the best parts of the stay. We were there in January, had the pool to ourselves in the evening, and the hot tub was just the right temperature. The pool is great, though its heating equipment is loud enough that you have to shout to talk. The desk staff were kind at check-in. My father has stayed here a few times over the years, and while it’s better than some places we’ve been, it’s pretty average compared with nicer hotels. I grew up in Terrell, so it feels homey to me, and it’s a little home away from my new home in AR. We came as a family because we had to attend a relative’s funeral. At first things were fine. It’s a bit dated, but I don’t care much about interior design. I’ve stayed in worse Super 8s and Motel 6s, so the complaints from other reviewers about dated furniture seem laughable to me. If you’re visiting Texas and want fancy, go to Dallas or another popular area. The mattress, though, has no support and feels like sleeping on particle board, like an old one from the 80s or 90s. My biggest complaint was the bathroom. The bottles are mounted high on the wall, about eye level for me, and I nearly squirted body wash into my eyes. I’m short, and people with disabilities might not be able to reach them easily either. Just provide little bottles, or at least a bar of soap, however small. In room 602, the tile beside the tub was broken and crumbling, which is dangerous. I wouldn’t put an elderly or disabled person in that room, especially with the broken tile and hard-to-reach bottles. They act like guests will steal everything and don’t even provide soap. We didn’t have mold, humidity problems, or bad smells like some people have reported, and there were no bugs either. It seems they’ve cracked down on that issue, which is good. This isn’t a pet friendly hotel, so unless you have a registered service dog, Fido can’t come; same for cats, and you’re better off elsewhere if you need to bring a pet. It’s pretty quiet, so I’d go in the off season when kids aren’t running around the pool and you want a good night’s sleep. There are free pamphlets and information about things to do around Texas. I can’t comment on the complimentary breakfast yet, but I’ll update later. Other reviews say it’s good, so I’m sure it’ll be fine. The Wafflehouse nearby was pretty good. I haven’t been to that IHop in who knows how long, so I can’t say about it. It’s a little out of the way, but there are food options around.

The staff were the best part of our stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Terrell. Both front desk attendants I spoke with were kind and helpful, and the woman in the breakfast area was extremely friendly too. The area was quiet, which was nice, though I wonder if that’s part of why the property hasn’t been maintained. The hotel isn’t updated, and that alone would be fine, but together with the other problems it made the place feel uncared for by management or corporate. We booked a queen suite and a queen standard room. The suite smelled strongly of stale cigarettes as soon as we entered. We had to sign several papers at check-in promising not to smoke, and we didn’t, but the room smelled like someone had been smoking in it constantly. My kids and I stayed there, and by the time we got home our belongings smelled like a dirty bar. I wasn’t comfortable having my small children sleep in that room. We also found several live bugs and had to kill them, with quite a few in the bathroom. I don’t know when the last extermination was, but it was either not recent or didn’t work. When we arrived around 10 p.m., the elevators were out. Some of our group arrived closer to midnight, and our rooms were on the fourth floor, so we had to carry all our luggage up the stairs. I understand it was late and might have been hard to get someone to fix it, but the elevators were still out around 9:30 the next morning. That was a huge hassle with two small kids, especially carrying them up and down. I won’t stay here again. I’d rather book in a neighboring town and pay more.

The TV was positioned nicely in the room, and there’s a Jacuzzi and indoor pool, though I didn’t use them. A nice Mexican restaurant, I hop, and a small shopping center are all within walking distance. The floor tile grout in the bathroom is disappearing, which was the downside for me.

The included breakfast has plenty of options, and I enjoyed the well-kept indoor pool and hot tub. The staff were friendly and the hotel is immaculately clean, but the maintenance issues are hard to overlook. Half the parking lot lights were burned out or acting up, creating a strobe effect that can shine into your room. There’s peeling paint and rushed repairs on walls and ceilings, and the carpet is worn out and needs replacing. The WiFi barely works and cuts out often. If the owners invested in upkeep, this could be a five-star stay. I’m concerned it could slip into a lower hotel tier if it stays this way much longer.

The breakfast was better than at some other hotels, but the rooms are old and outdated, with a lumpy, uncomfortable bed. I’d give them a negative star if I could. The front desk staff and manager need to get their facts straight before harassing someone with a service dog.
