Grandstay Hotel Suites Thief River Falls

The breakfast was a letdown for a three-star hotel. When I was there between 7 and 8 a.m., cereal, bacon, milk, and yogurt sometimes weren’t replenished. There were only two hot options, down from three, and tea or oatmeal was left until it ran out completely. One week there was a single packet of original oatmeal, with no replacement until it was gone. I’ve stayed at GrandStay Hotel & Suites Thief River Falls on and off during 2025, usually for about two weeks at a time, but my December visit was the worst. My room had potato chip bits on the bedroom floor and tables, dirty dishes in the dishwasher, a dirty stove, and a missing light bulb. Housekeeping only comes by request, not every few days or even weekly. Kitchenettes can also be missing or have broken pots, pans, and utensils, so you don’t know what you’ll get in a room. There have been other service problems over my stays: missing towels and remote batteries, a bathroom faucet that didn’t work right and stayed that way for a week, a leak under the kitchen sink, and a bag around the smoke detector that seemed like it could violate fire code. The gym is basically four treadmills or bikes and a few small weights. There’s a water jug, but I’ve never found cups there in the year I’ve been going. Front desk service is hit or miss, usually unfriendly, though an occasional person will greet you warmly. I’ve stayed because my company booked it and I needed a kitchen, but I’m looking for another option. I wouldn’t recommend it, especially at the price.

The staff were friendly and helped with questions and requests, like bringing more coffee. I’d stay again since there doesn’t seem to be a nicer choice nearby. The rooms are pretty basic. I had two queens, a decent sized bathroom, and the usual Midwest hotel amount of space. The microwave and fridge sit in that cheap wooden cabinet instead of being built in. And the hot tub has been closed and is being removed, so I shouldn’t have trusted the website photos. Breakfast was okay, with a few cold things and a couple hot ones. I wish they’d make more breakfast sandwiches. There seemed to be just one each morning, and it looked reheated from the day before. It’s the nicest hotel around, though of course I’m judging it as a GrandStay, not against five-star places.

The rooms were great and the location worked well. Breakfast was okay, too. I arrived at 7 p.m. on a cold winter night, and the front desk attendant was so unwelcoming that I wondered why I’d booked there. I nearly walked away. Staff should be trained before they’re put in front of customers.

The bed had no sheets when we arrived, and the mattress had puke stains. The hot tub wasn’t working either, and the pool room was so cold we couldn’t enjoy swimming.
