Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel

Holly in the executive lounge was a bright ray of sunshine first thing in the morning, extremely kind and helpful. The staff were friendly, and my room was clean, though a touch dusty. I loved the gorgeous sunrise view from the 9th floor. The hotel is beautiful inside and perfectly located near downtown. I was only in town for one night, but had a delightful experience. The jerk wings from the rooftop restaurant were flavorful, and the Lychee Empress drink was divine.

The rooftop bar and restaurant is terrific, though it's expected to reopen in March or April. Downstairs, the hat and restaurant has surprisingly great food, especially the pork chop. The rooms are modern, nice, and clean. This is my go-to hotel in downtown tomorrow.

It's a beautiful hotel, with spacious rooms, and the valet is friendly and quick. I did have one concern in the shower: the water suddenly got hot enough to burn my hand and feet before I could move away. I like hot showers, but worry about a child using it and getting scalded without warning. This should be fixable, and I hope they address it.

I travel to Toledo for work and have regularly stayed at the Renaissance downtown. I'm a frequent traveler, and this was by far the worst hotel experience of my life. I work 630a-730p and mainly use the hotel to sleep. On Wednesday, January 21st, I checked in at 730 PM for two nights. At 930 PM, while I was in my room, I heard a loud knock. When I went to the door, a man barged in, said he was maintenance, and that he was there to change the TV batteries. As a woman traveling alone, I was scared and immediately left for the front desk. The woman there helped me and said it wasn't protocol, but maintenance routinely disregarded room-entry rules. She moved me that night to the presidential suite, the Glass City Suite, as an upgrade for the trouble. The next evening, Thursday January 22nd, I got back to my room at 7:30 PM. I thought I heard water trickling as I slept, then at 0200 AM a loud crash woke me. The bedroom ceiling had collapsed, tiles broke across the floor, and ice-cold water poured in. It was right beside where I was sleeping, and the heavy, waterlogged tile could have injured or killed me. Terrified and disoriented in the dark, I packed while trying to call the front desk. No one answered. I dressed, grabbed my bags, and went to the lobby. There was nobody at the desk at 0210 AM, and I considered sleeping in my car until work. An employee eventually came by, found the desk worker, apologized, and offered to comp my stay. I was moved to a third room and assured its ceiling was stable. At 0220 I entered a third-floor corner King. It was freezing, even though the heat was running. The thermostat was set to Heat at 72 degrees but read 63. The front desk told me to turn it up and wait five minutes, saying the room was cold because it had been unoccupied. Exhausted, with a 0600 AM wake-up, I set it to 90 and tried to sleep. In the morning it read 58 degrees, absolutely frigid. This was a nightmare stay. The hotel's condition appalled me, and staying at the Renaissance Toledo Downtown has hurt my work and mental health. The staff were pleasant, but the facilities were poorly maintained and unsafe. I won't stay again and have checked out for the last time.
