Carley at the front desk was especially kind and friendly. That made such a difference, and was the main reason we decided to stay. My family had a great time doing puzzles and playing games by the lobby fireplace. You can borrow books, puzzles, and games for your room, too. The public areas were spotless, even with winter weather outside. The rooms weren't quite as pristine, but they were still nice, cozy, and spacious, with fireplaces that were perfect for bundling up. Our room also had a washer and dryer, which was a godsend. There was fresh coffee and hot chocolate all day, plus fresh-baked cookies at 7 p.m. Every room faces the bay, which made for a unique stay. We can't wait to come back in summer to enjoy the water. ETA: Our toilet kept clogging from the start. The front desk girl immediately called someone to fix it, but after he left we had to mop up toilet water with our towels. At bedtime, it was still clogged, so we used the bar bathroom all night. We asked to change rooms the next morning. The morning staff helped, but didn't offer anything for the trouble, and we had to wait a few hours for a comparable room. We packed everything onto a cart and went into town while we waited. The next room was slightly bigger, and we paid more for the following night. I would've appreciated a prompt move to any available room without an extra charge. It was especially inconvenient to walk our minor children to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Most of the stay was lovely, and Stacey at the front desk was wonderful, helpful, and easy to talk to. The end of the visit was unfortunate, though. My husband called that morning to ask about a late checkout, then worked in the lobby so he could take his meetings and we could still check out on time. A front desk staff member, I believe her name was Mary, approached him while he was working and tapped her wrist to signal he needed to check out. She didn't ask who he was, what room he was in, or whether he was checking out that morning. We'd had no in-person contact with her before, so she didn't know who we were or our checkout time. It felt like the message was simply, “you need to leave.” It seemed to me that she racially profiled my husband. That was a disappointing finish to an otherwise very good stay.

We had a two-bedroom suite during the off season, with a full kitchen and lots of room. The bay view was gorgeous, and the wood trim and fireplace gave it a cabin feel. I loved the soaker tub beside the bed. Staff were sweet, and maintenance came right away when the toilet flushed slowly. Everyone was great, and the coffee and tea bar was free around the clock. We'll definitely stay here again when we return to traverse City.

We were traveling north and spent just one night at Tamarack Lodge. The room was cozy, the bed was so comfortable, and we enjoyed wine by the fireplace. There was a balcony overlooking the lake, and even though the night was very cold, we still loved the view. We'd definitely come back.

The rooms were beautiful and exactly what we wanted. But after we left, they charged my card another 250. When we called, they said the unit was a mess, with "beer everywhere" and "hair in the bathtub." They hung up as soon as we tried to question the charge. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. We had a few empty bottles on the counter to return and two open bottles of wine on the table. We were careful to leave the unit as clean as you'd expect from a considerate family. I've worked at my share of resort hotels and seen some really trashed units, but never charged someone who shouldn't have been charged. If housekeeping can't handle a few bottles and a little hair in the tub, I don't know what they're doing.
