I still visit the hot springs twice a week, though it’s been a few years since I stayed as a hotel guest at the Charles. This review is just about the baths. For $12, or $14 if you need a towel, you can use the original baths from the 1930s and 1940s, which have been nicely updated. The tubs are clean and scrubbed after each use. You can shower first if you want, and add cold water to adjust the temperature. I usually refill my tub at least once when the water gets too cool. There’s also a shared tub on the roof and another downstairs. The front desk staff, who clean the tubs too, are helpful and polite. They work hard, and tips are appreciated. Other hot springs around town are fancier, but the Charles is an authentic, budget friendly choice. Go here if you’d like a glimpse of an old time hot springs experience.

What made the visit possible for me was how Avi handled accessibility. I’d called and messaged earlier, but my phone died before I could follow up. When my son, who’s my caregiver, and I arrived, I realized I couldn’t safely manage the stairs to the rooftop soak on my own. Avi changed our reservation right then, moving us to the downstairs bathhouse. Without that, I wouldn’t have been able to go. Avi also kindly walked us through the bathhouse rules so we felt at ease and welcome. I’m deeply grateful. That was thoughtful accessibility in action, beyond just good service. The bathhouse itself was beautiful, with stunning tile, greenery along the walls, water available, and a calm atmosphere that made it easy to relax. It felt carefully designed and restorative. The gift shop was adorable, too, with lots of unique, lovely things. My son found a piñon soda, and I had a strawberry cooling, refreshing prebiotic drink.

We had a wonderful weekend and will definitely come back. The rate was great, and although the place doesn’t look like much from the outside, our room was really nice. The service was phenomenal, and the shower was amazing. We spent our first night in the rooftop tub under the stars for an hour. It was calm, quiet, and relaxing. The jets are broken, but honestly, their noise would’ve spoiled the atmosphere. The individual meditation tubs were nice and hot and just as peaceful. There’s also a fun little shop in the lobby with knick-knacks, crystals, soaps, and groceries, including local produce and frozen foods.

We appreciated the central location, reasonable price, and friendly staff, but our mid-century mystic room had some problems. Despite the no smoking sign, it smelled like stale cigarette smoke. The heater made a loud knocking noise and blew a strong fan, waking us during the night. There wasn’t a sponge or drying rack for dishes, and the chairs and couch didn’t feel very clean.

We came for a late night soak in a rooftop hot tub. It was a beautiful, cold evening, and the water was really hot. While we waited for our tub to open, the staff were extremely nice and showed us around. Everything was clean, quiet, and exactly what we wanted.
