Tanque Verde Ranch

The pool area is lovely, and there's a great mix of things to do, from yoga and hikes to biking and rides. I do wish there were live music or a bonfire in the evenings to make the nights feel a little more special. I also got a bit of a crush on Scotch, one of the horses. We had a wonderful stay at Tanque Verde Ranch. The food and lodging were great, the views were beautiful, and the horses are clearly very well cared for. The staff in general made us feel comfortable. My one small reservation was that some of the wranglers came across with a bit of an attitude, and I wish they'd been friendlier. Even so, we loved our time there and I'd happily come back and recommend it.

The horseback riding ended up being our main focus, with 3-5 hours a day spent on lessons and walks. We initially planned to pass the lope test, but chose to enjoy the walks, the intermediate ride with trotting, and an intermediate lesson instead. The breakfast ride was great too. We were there for 3 nights, and the service throughout was warm and attentive. Our Roadrunner ridge deluxe casita was comfortable and nicely situated, and we had a fire in the room each night. I also had a very relaxing massage. The food was mostly solid, with some real standouts. One dinner's cavatappi and short rib could have held its own against the best Italian restaurants. The cookout was our weakest meal, though still decent, and the music and setting were fun. Their amazing cast iron smores dessert is served at lunch, which seems funny because it really belongs at the cookout too. My husband and I came without our little one, but hope to return with family when the kids club is an option for them.

The food was better than we expected, with lots of tasty choices and everything seasoned and cooked really well. After dinner we played horseshoes, which made for a fun end to the night. The staff were so helpful and attentive. The Tanque Verde Ranch Cookout is set in a beautiful spot. We took a short walk through the desert to get there, then came to a charming entrance, warm lights, a rustic bar, folk and country music live, and big fire pits ringed with tables. It was a memorable evening, and we plan to come back, hopefully for the sunset horse ride beforehand.

The riding was easily my favorite part. The wranglers and instructors helped everyone feel comfortable and safe, whatever their age or riding ability. Bill gave me great instruction, thanks! The staff were friendly, accommodating, and always ready with helpful advice. The food was amazing too. Such a great place, I can't recommend it enough.
