A housekeeper came into my room without knocking while I was asleep, even though I’d paid for the stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites Midtown on 51st. Then a manager pounded on my door, yelling that I wasn’t supposed to be there. He made me come down to the lobby and kept shouting in front of everyone, refusing to look at my check-in details. He came back a second time, yelling again, demanding my name and threatening me. I finally gave my name, Travis, and he then saw I was assigned to room 322, not 222. But my check-in receipt clearly said 222, and I had the keys for that room. He still walked off yelling. When I asked for the owner, he shouted that he was the boss and there was no corporate office to contact. I’ve never been treated or humiliated like that at a hotel, and I’ll never stay here again.
The rooms were clean, but the tub leaked badly during our shower and left a big puddle by the door. The showerhead wasn’t spraying outside the tub, so that wasn’t the cause. We also used the pool the next day and found only a couple of towels. The front desk man said they were all dirty and there was nothing he could do. A few minutes later he showed up with more, so I don’t understand why he couldn’t just have said he’d check. The towel situation seemed poorly managed. Breakfast ended at 9, unlike other La Quintas that serve until 10. At 9 sharp they turned off the dining room lights and shouted that it was closed while people were still eating. The other family with us said they’d never seen hotel staff seem so eager to do less. Before all that, we’d come into the lobby out of the rain and the man behind the counter yelled at us for stepping on the large wet rug by the door. It was raining, so of course it was wet. Were we supposed to walk on the tile and risk slipping? It felt like he was trying to create an injury lawsuit situation. I wasn’t going to argue with the 250-pound man wearing about 12 gold chains. That didn’t seem appropriate work attire, and I wondered if he was a wannabe gangster or if the job was a cover. The service was awful, to say the least.
I’m in town for a hip replacement and had requested an accessible room twice, but none were available either time. Is stepping up and over into a shower really advisable for me? The elevator is also at the far end of a hallway from the desk, which shows little thought for guests with disabilities. At check-in, I waited more than five minutes at the front desk. That might not sound long, but with a cane it felt like forever. The desk person’s fake smile and forced upbeat act were even worse at 4:45 a.m. The room was relatively clean, but there was at least a month’s worth of dust under things on the furniture. Housekeepers need more time per room, and perhaps better pay would help too. Rooms should be properly cleaned: mop instead of using a Swiffer, clean and disinfect, rather than wiping visible spots with a damp cloth. The tub faucet was loose enough that a slight pull might have taken it off in my hand. I expect a lot better from a Wyndham property and LaQuinta, especially as a gold member. How about making all rooms accessible?
The location made it easy to reach stores and restaurants, and it’s right off the highway. There’s a large seating area, and breakfast had lots of good options. Staff were friendly and helpful. My room was clean and the beds were just right. I always have a great stay at LaQuinta Inn, and this place was no different.
The stay was pleasant overall, and I’d come back because the location was close to everything I needed. Still, I had a couple of issues this time, even though I usually give a great review in person. We had a double queen room, and the bed was really squeaky. The shower faucet for adjusting the hot water was broken, so I had to use a towel to turn it.
