At more than $300 a night on a non-football weekend in Tuscaloosa, this was terrible value. I’m a Lifetime Gold Marriott Bonvoy member and booked through AMEX Platinum Fine Hotels + Resorts expecting reliable service. This stay didn’t meet what I’d expect from either program. My wife and I got back from dinner around 10 p.m. and couldn’t get into our room. The electronic lock’s card reader did nothing, no click and no red or green light. Staff kept treating it as user error until, after four tries and conversations with three employees, they finally acknowledged the lock was broken. Just before midnight we were told, “We are having a technical issue.” At 2:15 a.m. we were still waiting in another room, without our things, including medication I really needed. There was no clear backup plan. We were told they hoped the lock vendor might call back the next morning, a Saturday, and staff couldn’t explain another way into the room. That raised serious concerns for me: if a child were stuck inside, or there were a medical or fire emergency, it wasn’t clear anyone could get in. The response afterward made it worse. It’s been almost 12 hours locked out, and they finally called a locksmith this morning. The ops manager called my cell, got defensive, said I was defensive, blamed employees, and hung up without saying goodbye when I asked for general manager Heather Dill to call. She said, “She had me call you but I will send her the message ...” then hung up. Amazing!!! People apologized and offered complimentary champagne and the same scripted courtesies, but they didn’t seem trained or empowered to fix the problem. It felt programmed, not professional, and like a major management failure for a premium property. Try the Embassy Suites.
The hotel looks nice, but the service didn’t match what we paid. If the wedding room block hadn’t brought us here, I wouldn’t have picked it, and I wouldn’t return. Our toilet was broken when we arrived. We were assured it would be fixed while we went to the wedding welcome gathering, but it wasn’t. We wanted to stay on the wedding party’s floor, so we waited until the next morning to move next door. That meant packing and unpacking everything again for our last night. Hot showers were also unavailable, and many others in the wedding party had the same problem. Breakfast was another letdown. Service was extremely poor, and the server wasn’t clear that gratuity had been added for our party of five and additional grandparents seated separately, all on one tab. After all the trouble, they offered breakfast coupons for the next day and only a $25 room adjustment instead of covering any breakfast charges. We were incredibly disappointed.
The hotel’s not very close to the Univ., but it’s in a great district for eating. The food was great, and the bar on the 5th floor is pretty cool. A wonderfully helpful, nice elderly gent. at the front desk told me about the area and the Univ. He was really informative.
A beautiful place right in the heart of T-Town, and my go-to in Tuscaloosa. I’ve stayed for ballgames and personal trips, and held multiple meetings here too. The team goes out of its way to make you feel at home. There’s a great restaurant, and the welcoming lobby is a nice spot to catch up with colleagues or friends.
The restaurant’s on the fifth floor, so avoid the fourth floor. There are heavy dropping sounds, heels walking overhead, and loud chairs and tables being moved. It keeps going until 11 p.m. or later. Otherwise the hotel is nice, new and updated. The gym is good, the room was clean and serviced daily, and the city views are great. Lots of restaurants are within walking distance. Parking right at the hotel is very limited, though there’s a large free garage next door.
