Jenny and Danyelle are the heart of this wonderful stay. They share the management and keep everything running smoothly, while treating guests like family. The Bamboo Guest Cottage sits among ferns and trees, with a private Japanese ofuro soaking tub beside it. Inside, the furnishings and art are lovely, the many windows look out to the forest, and you can barely see or hear the other rooms. There’s a full kitchen, a generous daily basket of pastries and fruit, and excellent Hawaiian granola. Even the coffee, which is 100% Kona, is exceptional. The retreat is in a quiet residential development, about 10 minutes from both the National Park and Volcano Village. The rainforest setting is idyllic.

The daily delivery of fresh fruit, baked goods, and granola to our unit was delicious. The location also couldn’t be better for visiting Volcanoes National Park. We loved our stay, which felt more exotic and unlike any other Bed & Breakfast we’ve tried. Each unit stands on its own and comes in a different size. Cleanliness was off the charts, especially by our fussy standards. Jenny and Danielle at the office were friendly and knowledgeable, and housekeeping was efficient without getting in the way.

We stayed in the Sanctuary cottage and really liked it. The Japanese hot tub and outdoor shower were favorites. The room is small, but all the windows make it feel open, and it has nearly everything needed for a comfortable stay. The details have been thought through. I’d stay there again.

The Bamboo Guest House at Volcano Rainforest Retreat was even more magical in person than the professional photos suggested. I especially loved the Japanese bath, reading nook, cozy kitchen, comfortable bed, and all the nature right around us. Being so close to the volcano was a real bonus, and we were lucky enough to see a spectacular eruption. The folks there went above and beyond from arrival through goodbye. We loved the whole stay and will return when we’re back in Hawaii.

Jenny, the property attendant, welcomed us warmly and shared helpful restaurant suggestions. She also helped arrange massages at our cabin. We got a tour of the grounds and amenities, plus a lovely basket of fruit and pastries. Those thoughtful touches and the caring staff made the visit memorable. The retreat is in the town of Volcano, about a 50-minute scenic drive from Hilo, with several restaurants and cafes nearby, though some close earlier than others. The guest book had useful information on dining and shopping. Our cabin was surrounded by forest, with huge windows on every wall and a rustic but comfortable feel. The bathroom has tall glass windows, yet dense foliage gives privacy, and there are blinds if you’d prefer them. The on-site hot tub was a lovely way to relax beneath the canopy. It also had cozy blankets and a gas fireplace, which came in handy because Volcano gets chilly in the evenings. Bring a hoodie or light jacket. A couple of things to know: Wi-Fi can cut out now and then, though it works well when connected. The forest is full of bird, frog, and wildlife sounds at night. We found them soothing, but light sleepers who want quiet might bring earplugs. This felt like a hidden paradise and a great place to reconnect with nature away from a bustling town. 10/10, highly recommend.
