The room was just clean enough for us to stay a few days, which is about the only positive I can find. Every amenity was closed, including the pool and restaurant, so there were none of the usual hotel services. The whole place felt worn and dingy. The carpet looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in decades, and mildew smell was strong throughout. In the middle of a Vermont winter, we were given only a thin fleece blanket, nowhere near enough. It seems the building had been used as a homeless shelter, and its return to hotel use feels incomplete. It needs serious care and investment. We booked at the last minute and this was the only place available for under $700 a night, which is why we stayed. Until they renovate, replace the carpets, provide proper bedding, and deal with the mildew, I can’t recommend it. There are better places around Rutland if you’re willing to pay more.

We just needed somewhere clean to sleep before heading to Killington, and this did the job. Two adults and a child stayed in a first-floor room with two full or queen beds. We’d try another room sometime, though maybe we were just really tired and liked the beds. We stayed 12/26-12/27. The mattresses, frames, and sheets seemed brand new and were clean, with no bugs, always a win. The bathroom corners could use attention, but the tub, sink, and toilet were clean, and there were Bath & Body Works toiletries. The TV worked well, and there was a mini fridge and microwave. The room still had carpet. We wore slippers and socks, since walking barefoot on a hotel floor isn’t our thing. The hotel’s dated and needs a makeover, though it looks like they’ve started with the rooms. The hallways need plenty of work too. We didn’t explore much, but it might have been a cool place in its prime. They said up front there were no amenities. We didn’t ask whether the pool or hot tub were open. It’s downtown Rutland, near what you might need. It was snowing and the roads were rough, and reception seemed short-staffed. Safety comes first, though, and the staff were friendly to us.

We got a room that was good enough for one night in a hopefully clean bed, and the location worked well for our vacation. The hotel itself, though, was lacking in cleanliness and atmosphere. I gave it one star and won’t stay again. If the price draws you in, there’s a reason it’s so cheap. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Hampton inn next door. The first key we were given wouldn’t open our door. The original carpet looked like it had never been cleaned and smelled of mildew and old cigarette smoke. There were no-smoking signs on the room doors, but we could smell fresh smoke in the air too. The desk attendant was helpful when we went back, although at first they assumed we’d leave for the night and didn’t offer to move us. Once we asked, my fiance checked another room to make sure the door worked and it didn’t smell of mildew or cigarettes. The hallway still had that same holiday and dirty-carpet smell. The replacement room had what looked like new hardwood flooring, but the furniture was from the 1990s, and the mini fridge didn’t fit in its spot. There was no down comforter, just a fleece blanket and a new Amazon metal bed frame. The bathroom was in disrepair, and the TV remote was absolutely disgusting. The listing photos made it look like a newly redone, cozy bedroom. The hotel is Cortina inn, rising from the derelict remains of a Holiday inn in a spot between Newark, New Jersey and Stowe Vermont that’s perfect for a vacation stop.

The beds were terrible, there was only one thin fleece blanket, and the filthy hallways smelled like stale cigarettes and mold. This place needs so much work they should demolish it or start over completely. Vermont should be ashamed to let it operate.

We come up to Vermont from Pa. most weekends and have stayed in hotels all over. This was the worst one we’ve had in years. Breakfast was unavailable, none of the vending machines worked, and the TV had maybe ten channels. The pool was open, but we didn’t dare use it. The bathroom felt sketchy at best. If you need somewhere to stay, keep looking.
