Watkins Motel

The room was cramped and very basic, and the air conditioner was so loud we had to switch it off and sleep in the heat. We had booked through Booking.com well in advance: one room with two queen beds for four people. On arrival, the manager said the room was ready but asked for an extra 30 dollars because there were four of us. That felt unfair and unexpected. In my experience, US hotels and motels usually charge by the room rather than by the person, especially when breakfast isn't included, and this place doesn't provide breakfast at all. The staff spoke only very basic English, which made it hard to communicate. The stay was disappointing. I wouldn't recommend it unless you just need a bed for one night and nothing more.

There isn't any food provided, though they do have fresh coffee and tea supplies at reception. Toby's donut shop is a good breakfast option, and I'd really recommend it. The location is convenient, about a five-minute walk to downtown and two minutes to the State Park. We slept very well: despite being on the main road, the room was quiet thanks to being set back a little. The rooms were very clean, the beds comfortable, and the owners and staff were lovely. A pleasant surprise for a motel.

Watkins Glen State Park is right across the street, so we could hike early and still return to shower before heading out. Shops, restaurants, and the waterfront are a 10-15 minute walk away. Our room was comfortable, and parking was just outside the door. The owner was friendly and helpful, and gave us sightseeing and dinner tips. We booked for one night and it worked out perfectly. We'd definitely come back.
