The Charlie Hotel

This charming place is my favorite stay in LA, and I think it’s worth the money. It’s set up much like an Airbnb, with a dishwasher, washer and dryer, and full kitchen, but you also get hotel perks like cleaning, an in-person concierge, and dedicated parking. They’re thoughtful about the small things too, like real flowers and plants, and a complimentary pie on Thanksgiving. I can’t say enough good things about this gem.

The staff made our work trip especially memorable. I mentioned that my colleague would be thrilled by a particular room named after a song he loves, and it was waiting for him when we arrived. We’d originally booked a suite and a studio, then got a surprise upgrade to two lovely suites. They were spacious, spotless, and comfortable, with updates that still let the building’s vintage character show through in the stained glass and exposed wood beams. The Charlie’s English cottage garden setting is peaceful and quiet. I’d stay again in a heartbeat, and hope to spend more than one night next time. It was an unpretentious, lovely treat.

We spent a lot of time researching LA hotels before finding The Charlie, and it turned out to be the most beautiful place we’ve ever stayed. It felt secure, like a little escape from the world and a glimpse of Hollywood’s golden age. Our only gripe was the amount of gardening noise during the day, though it wasn’t an issue when we were out exploring.

A lovely, comfortable hideaway amid busy Southern California. The rooms were cozy, the patios were lovely, and it was a great base for exploring Hollywood, LA, and Santa Monica.
