I’ve been a member of the GOLDEN 500 since 7/87, part of the charter membership. Back then everything was new, and we’d drive down for weekends. I’m 76 and love camping at the beach. I used to bring my children, and I’d love to take my grandkids there too, but after 38 years of dues I’ve decided not to pay this year. For the last 10 years I haven’t been able to use the park I pay for. It’s badly run down and didn’t feel safe for me, with drug users, homeless people, and poor maintenance. The lower and upper clubhouses, pools, and hot tub are all closed. One lane of the road to the dock has caved in, and the road to the upper park is full of potholes. People live there full time. Are they paying monthly rent? Where is the dues money going? It’s not going toward upkeep or repairs. I called La Conner, Washington, where I pay my dues, and last year they said repairs were underway and the place was being fixed up. I went down on 2/15/26 to check, took pictures, and saw no change. It still felt unsafe. What a shame, it WAS a beautiful place. I hope someone can come in and clean up the park.

We’ve stayed here a few times over the past few years, and it’s gone downhill fast. There are too many full time residents and animals wandering around, which is sad because we’d had some really good stays here. We rented a cabin for my elderly parents, but it was dirty and smelled because nobody had taken out the trash. The curtains didn’t cover the windows, and the bathroom ceiling was falling down. We called the number at the check-in station eight times over two days and nobody answered, even when we were just trying to check in Friday at 7 p.m. We also had an RV spot and a boat at the lower campground near the dock. I parked the boat trailer at the top of the hill as required, but its tongue was pushed or struck and shoved about 8 feet through the gravel. The jack wheel was damaged so badly it won’t roll in my driveway anymore. The full timer in the next space kept parking in our spot and got indignant when we asked him to move.

We had a cottage reservation, but when we arrived there was nobody at check-in. I called the number on the sign, and a woman said someone was in the booth. There wasn’t. She came up to the booth, angry and rude, and only told us the key was in the room. The room stank as soon as we walked in. Half the curtains were missing, and paint was peeling from the bathroom ceiling. Opening the windows didn’t get rid of the smell. We called a couple of times over the weekend and got no answer. On Sunday I took out the trash and found another bag under the sink, full of rotten crab and fish guts. I nearly got sick. A man who worked there said, “Oh, that’s my fault,” and that was it. I’ve been going to the Oregon coast for almost 70 years, and this was by far the worst.

The tent area was well maintained, but its only accessible bathroom is in the clubhouse, and that building was closed even though people were still using it. The only other campground bathroom is across the highway, so closing this one makes no sense. The drained pools also look like they haven’t been maintained for a long time. I’m sure this resort was really nice once. I wouldn’t mind paying a little more if it helped get the clubhouse open again.

We were lucky to get a waterfront RV spot, and the view was just beautiful. The clubhouse was open, with clean bathrooms, and the gentleman handling reservations was stellar. Most staff were friendly; one person seemed short on social skills but was helpful, while another was friendly but didn’t know much. I’ve been coming here for over 30 years, so it’s hard to see the place turning to rubbish. There are safety concerns, including the stairs, though they’re working on the roads, so hopefully those improve. There’s no pool or hot tub, no boat rentals, and the women’s bathroom in the old pool area is unusable. It can’t really call itself a resort anymore. It’s a beautiful marina trailer park.
