Hillard House Inn

Right by the Susquehanna levees, there’s a lovely little river walk. We also had great weather for walking downtown to some good restaurants, and for seeing the glacial features at the 7 tubs and the boulder field. The old house is lovely, with excellent hosts, clean private bathrooms, and a nicely decorated shared area. You can tell they love the place and having visitors. There are just four rooms or suites, so they’re available to talk about the area, dietary needs, and breakfast ideas. Breakfast runs from 8-10. The dining room and food were excellent, and I’ve never seen another room with a linen fold chair rail. The peach crepe was excellent and just the right size, and there was a fruit plate too.

We booked a suite for our anniversary and were surprised by how spacious it was. It felt like great value, and the house was immaculate and cozy. The deep jetted tub was a highlight. My partner and I are both very tall, yet we could sit comfortably in it with plenty of room left. Breakfast was delicious and filling. We only had one night, but had an amazing stay.

A fun little elevator carried our bags upstairs, and the high-ceilinged house has lots of period prints, awards, and cross-stitches to stop and look at. We had a lovely one-night stay in the suite. The welcoming hosts brought breakfast out in well-timed courses, served on pretty peacock china. A great place to stay if you’re in town for a show or to visit a college.

Cecilia and Gordon were warm, welcoming hosts, and after just one night my wife and I left feeling we’d made friends in Wilkes-Barre. The Hilliard House Inn has the grand feel of an old-school B&B from before the concept was watered down by people happy to sleep on air mattresses. The rooms have all the conveniences you need, including robes and wine glasses. We plan to come back soon.
