I could check in as soon as I arrived, even without a reservation, and the location was great. The room itself was bare-bones, old, and run-down, and there wasn’t any toilet paper in the bathroom. The bigger problem was my credit card: besides the $148.50 room charge, someone added another $669.30 across two invoices on different days. There was no phone number to call and ask why, so I reported it to my bank as fraudulent card use. The woman working there couldn’t work out simple change and asked to use my credit card, saying it would be easier for her.

There’s plenty of natural beauty along this stretch of coast, with mountains and trees to look at as you drive by the river. It’s a lovely place to share a getaway with your significant other, or you might find yourself wishing you’d brought a fishing pole. The township is friendly, there are great fishing charters, and there’s lots of off-road fun. Whether you’re camping or staying at one of the smaller inns, there’s a lot to enjoy in the area.

The receptionist, Lori, was especially kind and helpful. She even walked with us to point out the car charging spot. We felt safe around the hotel, and the location made it easy to explore, with most attractions about a 10-minute drive away. We arrived around 8:30PM Friday for a long weekend. It’s a quiet, decent place with an antique feel, and I think it’s been there for over 70 years. The price was much more reasonable than other nearby hotels. Our room was tiny, but clean and tidy, with a fridge and a small old TV. Breakfast came with the stay, though the selection was limited to bagels, coffee, some fruit, instant oats, and cupcakes. I couldn’t find any photos online before booking, so I took a few to help future guests. I’d recommend the hotel to people visiting Winchester Bay.

My family had a room during this visit too, and they got the same rude, clipped, unwelcoming service at the front desk that I did. At first I wondered if I was taking it the wrong way, but it left us close to canceling and staying in the next town. I’ve stayed at the Winchester Bay Inn several times over the years and usually found it friendly, accommodating, and affordable. After this latest visit, I’m not sure I’ll come back.

The rooms and service are modest, but they did both so well that it felt more like a 4-star stay than the usual 3-star motel vibe. I loved being right by the dock, and that adorable vintage nautical dome light has me obsessed, lol. I’ve included a video of it. We loved our stay, and it was great value.
