My room stayed cold no matter how high I turned the thermostat, even though the hallways and first floor were warm and cozy. It made me think the furnace wasn't circulating air properly to that room. There was a portable heater available, which helped as an option. That's the reason I rated the stay 4 out of 5. The Summit Street Inn itself was spotless and peaceful, a distinctive historic property in a handy spot near downtown Winston Salem. Staff were friendly, and several excellent restaurants were within walking distance. Breakfast was included and delicious, with eggs, grits, bacon, yogurt, fruit, bread, bagels, and muffins. The bed was very comfortable, and parking behind the Inn felt safe and there was plenty of it.

Stephanie was so helpful, and I highly recommend The Summit Street Inn. I spent two days in the Winston room upstairs and got to look at two other rooms on that floor. All three were impressive, with lots of space, comfortable beds, lovely linens, and plenty of quality "My Pillows". My room had a huge, well equipped bathroom with a cast iron soaking tub and Dead Sea bath salts. The shower was beautiful, with a floral design set at an angle, two shower heads, and a marble topped shelf or bench. It's big enough for several people. There's an oversized TV and a mini fridge in the room, but no microwave. There is one downstairs in the common room. Breakfast was hot and especially good: scrambled eggs, grits, crisp bacon, fresh muffins, and fruit and breads to toast.

We chose the loft, which had a roomy bathroom with both a soaking tub and a shower. It was clean, comfortable, and decorated with care. The rooms all have their own look. I have tinnitus and am sensitive to sound, so quiet heating, cooling, and plumbing matter a lot to me. The Summit Street Inns was a good fit: even though the buildings are restored old houses, the rooms were quiet, and there wasn't much street noise. They're on the edge of downtown, within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants. We couldn't stay for breakfast, though it is prepared and served on-site. The wine at check-in was a nice touch, and all the kind things people say about Mary Evelyn are true. She's a gem and made our first trip to Winston-Salem a good one.

Breakfast was amazing, a full meal that changed each day, and they served a glass of wine each evening too. The location worked well for walking to downtown and nearby restaurants, and Wake Forest was only a quick drive away. Stephanie, my host, was warm and attentive, shared plenty of ideas for places to visit, and made the stay feel especially charming. There's a lot to take in here: the deep history and quirky, unique decor give you something new to notice as you look around. Each room is different, quiet, and well equipped. A special place, and very reasonably priced. I'd highly recommend staying here.

The gardens are amazing, and the rooms are absolutely beautiful. It's a historic place with great decor and lots of space, but it still feels surprisingly peaceful in the city. I recommend the seasoned pretzels and hanging out with Jefferson, the most popular cat around town. :+)
