The heated pool was the highlight of our two-night stay. I enjoyed it four times! The front desk staff were great, and the breakfast attendant was nice. There was a decent range of food in the morning. Our king suite was comfortable and roomy, with a fridge, microwave, and a large dresser. The sheets felt almost silky, the pillows were fluffy, and the nightstand power bank had USB ports as well as regular outlets, which made charging both phones easy. The flat-screen TV had DirecTV and plenty of channels. We were about 15-20 minutes from the places we visited around Surprise, Peoria, and Glendale for Spring Training, so the location worked well. There were also plenty of restaurants and stores nearby. We did hear road and train noise, even though our room was at the back of the suites building and didn't face Grand. We live in Las Vegas, so it didn't bother us much. The bigger problem was finding out there was no elevator only after we arrived. We had a heavy cooler full of food and drinks, plus our luggage, to carry up to the second floor, and stairs are hard for us as older travelers. After getting home, I searched the website and could only find the no-elevator detail in a review nearly 40 reviews down the page. We would've asked for a ground-floor room if we'd known. Spring Training hotels can cost a lot, and we thought this one was fairly priced. We'd stay again, but request a ground-floor room next time.
Our TV didn't work, the sheets kept slipping off the bed corners, and the shower made a terrible plumbing whine. The room was only mediocre in cleanliness, though housekeeping was nice. When we asked for towels and service, they never came. We'd accidentally booked twice for the same day, an honest mistake, but they refused a refund because the reservation was noncancelable and made no exception. The staff treated us as if we were off the streets, despite our Diamond Member status. They charged us $150 anyway, and said we'd have to wait until the manager arrived after 9 a.m. to get our cash back. We also didn't receive the Diamond snacks and waters we usually get. Breakfast was restricted to the very small, crowded breakfast room, and staff literally chased us down. The hotel is next to Q Ts, which was loud, with homeless people, sex workers, and drug users nearby.
The room was clean and looked nice, and the night was quiet except for the occasional train nearby. Check-in was quick and easy, and we found the price very reasonable for a fairly last-minute stay without having to lower our standards. I also liked the large refillable shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bottles fixed to the bathroom walls. Having room service available to order is a great feature, too.
The shower issue really took away from an otherwise good stay. At check-in, nobody mentioned that our room was one of several where the knob had to be turned a particular way to start the water. We both tried, gave up, and washed at the sink. When we mentioned it at breakfast, we were told the staff member hears complaints about this often and shown how to turn it on. I don't understand why we weren't told at check-in. By the time we got back and tried it, I was already past upset. We were in room 310, off to the side of the horseshoe. I didn't feel as comfortable parking right outside the room, mainly for the car, though I felt safe walking in through the hallway. If we stay again, I'll park in the more enclosed horseshoe and use the hallway. The building is aging, but clean and nicely decorated. A newer place would probably cost $100 more, so that felt like a fair trade. Also, anyone sleeping during the day should know jets overhead can get loud. We noticed why earplugs were provided when the first one went by around 8:30 a.m.; it wasn't a problem for us, but might be for someone else. There were lots of positives. Everyone we dealt with, at check-in, check-out, and breakfast, was very nice. The beds and pillows were comfortable, there were plenty of towels, and the room had good coffee, a fridge, and at least in our room, a built-in bathroom night-light. Breakfast was much better than a basic continental spread: sausage gravy and biscuits, waffle makers, pastries, cereal, orange and apple juice, coffee, boiled eggs, breakfast burritos, and fruit packs. The location suited us, with Desert Diamond Casino nearby and Banner medical close by for our specialist appointment. Aside from the shower problem, I was very happy.
The room and hotel were decent, and the location was good, but a strong urine odor made sleeping there a bad experience. I checked in and found the smell, which was probably from a previous pet. The only thing the desk person offered was a bottle of air freshener, which I emptied in the unit. I asked to switch rooms, but they refused, even though other guests were checking in after I went to the front desk. I then asked for a refund so I could stay somewhere else, and they refused that too. I booked directly through Quality In and the hotel, and they charged my card at check-in, so there was no third party involved. The person at the desk said they couldn't change rooms or issue refunds, and that I'd have to wait until morning or call the Choice Hotels 800 number. I called Choice Hotels; they opened a case, but they seemed to be only a marketing organization, with no oversight of the hotels they advertise. DO NOT PAY FOR YOUR ROOM IN ADVANCE WITHOUT CHECKING IT OUT FIRST!!!
