The old-city setting, just blocks from the port, was a plus. From the rooftop chairs we could look over the bay and watch the port machinery, and there were no mosquitos. Still, the price felt too high: we paid the same as at other places we liked much more. It was a mixed stay for us, 4/5. The building has a lovely Montevideo feel, with skylights, high ceilings, connected sections, lots of stairwells, and interesting details across the walls, floors, and ceilings. There was room to move around, plenty of couches and public spaces, several rooms over two floors, and a rooftop terrace. It was clean, and the kitchen and locker-room-style toilets and showers were usable. We had three main complaints. The room was advertised as having a private bathroom, but it didn’t. The Wi-Fi was awful, nearly unusable much of the time and completely unusable at night. And there were only two outlets in our room. The one by the bed seemed to charge our devices in a way that was clearly bad for them, so charging a phone or computer meant going without the fan until charging was done.

The staff were friendly, but the hostel felt pretty old-school, not especially clean, and a bit strange. There was no AC in the middle of summer, when it was 37 degrees. The area was terrible, on a really seedy street in an already dodgy part of Montevideo. We saw a homeless man on drugs threatening people with a shard of glass. I wouldn’t let my girlfriend walk alone there, even during the day.

The hostel itself is nice, with spacious rooms and a shared bathroom. But I found it baffling that they wouldn’t let us leave our luggage for the day, even for a fee. That felt very unfriendly to backpackers. The sign outside is also almost completely faded. Reply to the owner: Some backpackers do take advantage of hostels and spend a long time using the common areas while collecting their things, but that certainly isn’t all backpackers. This isn’t a problem unique to this hostel either, and good communication and mutual respect can prevent it. I don’t think my review was harsh. We had to carry our luggage around all day while waiting for our evening ferry. In two months of traveling in South America, I didn’t have to deal with this anywhere else, so I think my rating reflects the inconvenience.

The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. The people working and staying at the hostel were really nice, and it’s close to the center of Montevideo’s old, charming part. I’d recommend it to backpackers and anyone wanting to explore downtown 🤙 Just a note: there’s no air-conditioning, and the shared bathroom is separated by sex, of course.

Staff, room, location, all very good. I’d give it a solid 7/10, whether you’re there briefly or for a week. But it’s not chic, it’s more of a historic building.
