We booked one night through Booking.com to visit family in Maldonado. I wish I’d read the reviews instead of relying on the overall rating. The long confirmation message, full of disclaimers, was my first warning. It became clear this was a set of private apartments rather than a hotel, with no clear person taking responsibility for our stay. We were in apartment 1310 on the 13th floor. It was dated and needed refurbishment, and somehow there were ants up there too. We used a room towel at the pool without realizing that wasn’t allowed. Pool staff said nothing when we arrived, then asked for the towel and our room number as we left. I gave it to them, assuming they’d return it. After checkout, management messaged me on WhatsApp saying the towel was missing. I explained that pool staff had taken it, but they didn’t seem to believe me and said they’d check the cameras. A day later, I noticed we’d been overcharged by about 40 USD. I asked for a tax invoice through Booking.com, got no reply, then messaged management on WhatsApp and left a one star review. That review got a response: angry WhatsApp messages berating me, saying the towel hadn’t been found and they’d charged 150 USD to replace it. So they’d overcharged the stay and then charged a fortune for a towel they still had, seemingly in retaliation for my poor review. I even had to cancel my credit card to stop more fraudulent charges. Please avoid this tourist trap. It’s pretentious and pitiful. Run, don’t walk, past it.
