I won’t be staying at that hotel again.

Breakfast was the only good part of this stay. When I came back in the evening, my room had been given to someone else, with my belongings still in the closet. The staff were terribly unprofessional: neither the cleaner nor the manager had checked. They said they’d only noticed my key card among the ones for available rooms. Even if it was a mistake, they didn’t apologize or offer anything to make up for the inconvenience. Instead, they argued that I hadn’t told them anything, which wasn’t true. The man at reception asked whether I needed cleaning; I said yes, they could clean, and that I’d return in the evening. I had to explain this in broken Uzbek because nobody there speaks Russian. Luckily, there were other rooms available to choose from. In Stavropol, Russia, a cleaner once mistakenly threw out my things, thinking they’d been left behind. The manager apologized by phone, then they wrote to me and gave me a discount on my next stay. That was service. Uzbekistan apparently isn’t ready for that yet, or perhaps it just depends on the place. Don’t hand your key card to reception when you go out into the city.

The free massage chair is lovely after a long workday. My room was warmer than the others, but small, with an unpleasant little window above the entrance door. Water and a kettle were provided, and housekeeping is available if you ask. There wasn’t enough fruit or vegetables at breakfast, at least not sliced ones, and there was no yogurt. Everything is wrapped in polyethylene, and the mattress made that material rustle all night. Noise from the hallway carries into the room.

We booked a room advertised on the website for $25 and received confirmation. When we got to the hotel, we were told that room was no longer available, so we had to take a much more expensive one out of necessity. They wouldn’t honor the original price as a goodwill gesture. The replacement room was also filthy, with black hair everywhere and used toilet paper in the bathroom. Completely unacceptable.
