Caravan Sarai

A great place to stay when visiting Khiva. The location is very convenient, and breakfast had tasty local dishes and seasonal fruit to choose from. The price was affordable even in peak season. Most of all, the hospitality was so, so good. The receptionist was welcoming and friendly, and made my trip more enjoyable.

I loved the courtyard most of all. There’s a mulberry tree and a spot where a pond used to be, which gives you a sense of how the old building was used. The hotel is a former madrasah, an Islamic school founded in the early 1890s. The rooms are spacious, with a bedroom, a little sitting area, and a bathroom. Breakfast had a huge range of food and drinks, and the staff were lovely. It cost less than $40 a night. If I’d realized how nice the hotel and its surroundings were, I would’ve booked another night just to enjoy them.

A real gem. The staff were lovely, and the room was practical, clean, and very comfortable. You actually sleep in a madrassa. Breakfast was amazing, and I’ll definitely come back.

We could walk from the station with our backpacks, straight through the old town to this place just outside the west gate. It’s well positioned for getting around both inside and outside the old town, and nights were quiet. The caravanserai has a simple historic feel, with a calm inner courtyard, shade, and places to sit. Our 'twin room with shower' had two comfortable little rooms and two good beds, which had been put together as a double for us. The bathroom was clean, the shower warm, and the air conditioning worked well. The staff were attentive and helpful, whether giving city advice or opening a door when my hands were full. Breakfast was excellent too, and we tried quite a bit of the filter coffee. It was a comfortable, memorable stay, and I’d definitely recommend it.
