Hotel Bankir Khiva

Tim, the owner, was extremely hospitable, kind, and attentive, and the staff were always keen to help. The rooftop has an incredible view at sunrise and sunset. It was also a great base, just a five-minute walk from the main entrance of Itcha Kala. The room was spotless, the bed was comfy, and the building blends traditional Uzbek design with a modern touch. This was the best hotel we stayed in on our Central Asia trip. I'd highly recommend it and would love to come back.

This was my second stay in Kiva, and it ranks among the nicest hotels I've stayed at in Uzbekistan or anywhere else. The rooms are beautifully finished, the beds are soft and pillowy, and the service was unlike anything I've experienced in 35 countries. The staff's attentive service was absolutely top notch. The room and bed felt modern and new, and the owners were extremely nice. The staff spoke very good English and were really helpful with their recommendations. The hotel is an easy five-minute walk from the west gate of Ichan-Kala, just outside its walls, and close to all the best restaurants. You can watch both sunrise and sunset from the rooftop. Easily the best hotel in Khiva.

The walk to the old city, Itchan Kala, takes around 10-15 minutes each way, so I’d probably look for somewhere closer or inside next time. The rooftop view is nice, even though it feels a bit far away. Rooms are clean and basic, with small bathrooms, and the stay felt a little expensive for what we got. Breakfast was the letdown. We’d emailed ahead about not eating eggs as vegetarians and were told there’d be plenty to choose from, but there really wasn’t. When we mentioned it, nobody tried to prepare something separately. The serving spoons for the vegetarian and meat dishes were mixed up, too.
