Company House Hotel St. Croix

The room we ended up in smelled so strongly of cigarette smoke that I was miserable for both nights. It wasn’t just a hint from a previous guest, it smelled like decades of smoking, and I’m very sensitive to scents. Tobacco smoke makes me ill both physically and mentally. We had booked a superior king room directly on the hotel website the afternoon before, got a confirmation, and expected it might not be ready early since we had to check out of our previous place at 10am. We’d kept a bag of beach supplies out of our luggage, so when the room wasn’t ready, we borrowed beach towels and went to the beach. They’d also warned us it might take longer because the AC needed fixing. When we came back, the room still wasn’t ready, and then we were told the hotel was oversold and didn’t have our reserved room. They offered a tiny king room on the third floor with no windows or a room with two queens. We thought it over and chose the king, but then they said a premium king on the second floor had become available, so we took it. We’d booked at the last minute after our flight home was cancelled in advance because of a big winter storm, leaving us without a place for the next two nights. I’d picked this hotel because it was an easy walk from where we were, the price was available for such a good location, a king bed was available, and, most of all, it had a room available. I also liked the website’s claim that you could refill your water bottle by the ice machine, but there was no way to do that. The site is just wrong about it.
