The staff were friendly and helpful, which was the one bright spot. The rest of the stay was almost unbearable, and I wish the earlier reviews had been more candid. I rarely post negative reviews, but people should know what to expect. The sliding doors were broken and held shut with zip ties, so I didn’t feel safe enough to relax. There were no blackout curtains, and outside lights kept the room bright at night. The air conditioning couldn’t cool it down, and the thick, cheap-feeling microfiber sheets held in the heat. My daughter and I were hot and uncomfortable all night. The bed frames felt flimsy, and the mattresses dipped in the middle, making us slide toward each other as we tried to sleep. The room looked clean at first, but there was hair on the sheets, which was unsettling. I’ve stayed everywhere from basic motels to five-star hotels around the world, and this was the worst stay I’ve had for a lot of reasons.

The room was clean and comfortable, with cozy beds, good water pressure, and plenty of hot water for showers. I also liked the balcony for reading after a beach day, the water refill station, the breakfast on site, and the little free library. Snacks and drinks are available in the office for a reasonable fee, and the prices overall felt very affordable for what you get. Roxy and the team really care about guests. Liz was kind and helpful, and Veronica had useful tips on shops, food, and beaches. The front desk was always there when we needed help. The hotel-recommended driver, Kaya, was fantastic. Our airport pickup was on time and smooth, and he stayed until we were safely inside. For after-hours arrivals, they provide a private code for the front door. You can walk to shops, the museum, the fort, and several beautiful, clean beaches. I’d stay here again. They work hard to make the visit enjoyable, and that’s why I’m giving it five stars.

The friendly staff couldn’t make up for how uncomfortable the room was or the poor condition of the property. The bed was broken, the sheets weren’t clean, and the heavy, low-quality bedding trapped heat until we were sweating. Even with the air conditioning turned up, the room never got cool enough. A loud beep went on all night. We later found out it was coming from a broken microwave in the hallway. After rain the next morning, we also spotted leaks around the property, and there were visible cleanliness issues in the room. There’s no help with luggage either, so you have to carry your bags up the stairs yourself. My wife and I have traveled extensively, and this was easily our worst hotel stay. The Frederiksted Hotel fell below even our lowest expectations. We wouldn’t return. The people on the island were welcoming, but the experience has made us hesitant to fly back, though a cruise visit might be different.

Check-in went smoothly, and the hotel sent useful texts with codes and information. But at around 1 a.m., the toilet started leaking from the bottom. The emergency number first told me to use the lobby bathroom downstairs. I got there and found it needed a code, so I had to go back up and call again to get one. For the rest of the stay we used that public bathroom two levels down, and it wasn’t very clean. We couldn’t get ready in our room’s bathroom because the leak had soaked the floor and rug with water and human waste. At checkout I told the front desk what happened, said I was frustrated, and asked to speak with the manager. I was told the manager would contact me, but no one ever did. I wasn’t impressed with the service or cleanliness. There’s no one at the front desk from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., only an emergency/security number. I guess a broken toilet doesn’t count as an emergency to them.
