Dong Xanh Hotel

Communication was extremely hard. Only one person spoke English, and the counter staff didn't understand a word. This is a lower-standard hotel, maybe okay for a night or two if you don't expect much for $20 a night. The room was larger than expected, but not very clean for this kind of place and clearly needed renovation. There were always some bugs around, and geckos spent the night with us. That was okay since they eat the bugs in the bed. The biggest problem was payment. They don't accept credit cards, and nobody told us before we checked in. We were caught out because we expected to pay by card and didn't have enough VND left, since we were leaving Vietnam that day. They made us pay in US dollars, which we needed for the Cambodia visa. After some discussion, we paid $20, but only once we showed the price in our online booking record. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure they would have charged us more. That's why I can only give it one star.

The hotel is on the outskirts of town, and mosquitoes were everywhere, even in the rooms. It wasn't convenient. A taxi to the market costs $2 or more, though the meter shows less than $1. Renovations have been going on for over a year, so it can get noisy very early and building materials may be scattered around. The staff weren't very friendly either. If you leave luggage for storage, it sits unattended and unsecured in the lobby.

The managers were helpful and nice, and the motorcycle rental service was reliable. There's a large parking area too. For Chau Doc, this is the best hotel I've found at a reasonable price. I highly recommend giving it a try!

For the price, we got a spacious, clean, quiet room of a high standard, and the staff were very friendly. They can also arrange great trips at very reasonable prices and organize the onward journey to your next destination. I can strongly recommend this place.
