Vinh Huy Hotel

The staff seemed very money hungry, and everything was overpriced. We had to get bottles, bicycles, motorbikes, and laundry elsewhere across the street. Breakfast was really lacking, and they charged if you asked for anything to go with the dry bread. Booking.com had promised a flat TV, but there wasn’t one when I arrived. The staff helpfully told me I could watch everything on my phone using the wifi. At checkout, they asked for more than the price we’d agreed because they’d calculated using a high dollar rate. We argued for ten minutes before they accepted the original price.

The location worked well for getting to the bus station, but the room and pool were just average. I booked at 363,000 dong, then got charged a lot more at checkout. The receptionist said the dollar had gone up, but I paid in dong, so I don't see why that should affect my bill.

We paid 300,000 VND a night for each room, which felt far too much for the condition. The place is old, the shower looked poor, and only two power sockets in the room worked. I also checked the TV, and it wasn't working properly. Friends in room 307 left after one night because its window faced construction next door and the noise started at 6:40 in the morning. Our room, 306, was quiet, so we stayed one extra night, then moved to the place our friends found. It was nicer and cost 250,000 VND. Nha Thu is about 500 m from this hotel. After seeing that place, I think these rooms should be no more than 200,000 VND, even though they charge 500,000. The receptionist didn't speak English, and the other person who did was rarely there.

I've come back to Vinh Huy every year for nine years, and I'd recommend it for a budget stay. It's clean and comfortable, with what you need, and the centre is about a kilometre away on foot. Good value for the money.
