Camellia Tuan Chau

Hung, the owner, was really friendly and helpful during our stay at Camellia Tuan Chau Hotel. He arranged a bus and cruise for us and also made bikes available to rent. We were comfortable there, and the staff were attentive. We had a fantastic time and would recommend it for a memorable stay on Tuan Chau Island.

Tuần Châu felt like a ghost city, with empty houses everywhere. I’d avoid staying on the island and just book a boat tour from here. The room was overpriced, had no window or hot water, and looked nothing like the online pictures. It was mouldy and unclean, and the owners smoked in the lobby.

The hotel charged us for just one night when we left a day early, even though we had booked two. That was one good point. Our room smelled mouldy and had a used wine glass on the shelf, and the staff didn't speak English. Tuan Chau itself was deserted when we visited in early November, with hardly anyone around and many buildings unfinished. The hotel might have been somewhat alright if you don't need to spend all day there and can put up with the mouldy smell. The tourist town was empty, though it might appeal to people who enjoy exploring abandoned places. The ghost town atmosphere isn't the hotel's fault, but it's something to keep in mind.

A scooter we rented clearly had a starting problem and didn't feel safe to drive, but the staff didn't seem bothered when we raised it. We returned it and rented replacements elsewhere. Then the receptionist kept our driver's licenses and said we could only get them back at checkout the next day, even though she'd already copied our passports. At the hotel, staff slept on the lobby couches, smoked indoors, and played loud karaoke through a big speaker late into the night. They were rude and unfriendly throughout. It was a terrible stay, the worst. Don't stay here.
