I stayed in the second house, not the original Green homestay. It’s set in a backyard, with a huge upstairs terrace that includes the kitchen. The quiet was a real treat in noisy Hanoi. There’s everything you need in the nearby alley, and local street food stalls and beer places are just a short walk away. It feels very local, with a more authentic, less touristy neighborhood than the old quarter. I could leave my bicycle outside.

I booked through Agoda for five nights, but had to fight to get the room I’d already paid for. I arrived at 1 pm and was told to return at 2. When I came back at 2:06, the same man told me to wait another ten minutes so he could nap. I stayed and insisted he do his job. He then took me to Le Reveur around the corner, next to the main road and noisy. A woman there tried to push a fourth-floor room on me, saying through Google Translate that it was the same thing. I refused several times and asked for my original room at the original place, so the man took me back on his scooter. They'd apparently sold my room and tried to put me in a first-floor dorm instead, which I refused because I’d booked a single. The owner, who I think was the man’s dad, got involved and said my room was booked. He offered other rooms at higher prices, but I wouldn't pay extra. At last he showed me an upgraded room, saying I could stay one or two nights before moving to the original room. That move never happened. During my five-day stay, they sold the single room to walk-ins three times. I was grateful for the room I got because it was the only one with complete walls up to the ceiling, plus AC and windows that opened. There’s a full kitchen and free laundry on the second floor. The location is good, with a supermarket, restaurants, and bus stops just steps away. It was mostly quiet, but the walls were very thin, and with a shared bathroom you hear everyone coming and going. The bathroom had hot water, a bum gun, toilet paper, and toiletries. It's a homestay, so you clean your own room; there’s a broom and dustpan. How clean the bathroom is depends on the people sharing it. Based on my stay and other current and past reviews, they regularly sell rooms that are already booked. Would I stay again? No. Would I recommend it? Maybe, if you don't mind playing musical chairs for your room. Otherwise, look elsewhere or ask to speak to the owner, Dad.

They wouldn't refund me, and Agoda only gave me part of the amount back as credit. The building is one of three or four homestays within 300 metres, but online they're all listed under Green Homestay, and they overbook and misrepresent what you're getting. Bottled water is for sale, not free. There were bedbugs. I’d seen the reviews too late and even bought pest spray meant for bedbugs, but it didn't help. I ended up covered in bites, like a connect-the-dots puzzle. Do not book here under any circumstances, or you'll regret it. You'd be better off sleeping outside.

I confirmed a room, then arrived at 4 am and was told they were overbooked. They put me on a scooter to another nearby hotel that was also theirs, charged me extra for the stay and even for the ride, and weren't hospitable. I won't book with them again.

I got there around midnight and messaged on WhatsApp to ask if they had a room. The owner showed up, and when I asked about a dorm, he quickly ushered me onto a scooter and took me around the corner to a place he called a dorm. It was dim, grimy, cramped, and had no privacy, nothing like what was advertised on Agoda. The photos here and on Agoda show a different place. He seemed to be trying to scam me by taking me to his friends' houses. After dropping me off, he even laughed about me outside with the people he was sitting with. Don't consider staying here.
