A few days before check-in, the hotel said my room couldn’t be provided because of a “technical issue” and moved me to another hotel in the same group, saying the replacement would be equivalent or an upgrade. But on the day I was due to check in, the original room type still appeared available on Agoda, so it’s hard to understand why guests are being relocated if it’s supposedly unavailable. I booked through Agoda at Madelise Amica Hotel based on the room size, facilities, and photos. The replacement was considerably smaller, in older condition, and missing basic things like a desk and wardrobe. The hot water was also unstable throughout my stay. Agoda acknowledged that the problem came from the hotel, but there was no reasonable compensation or satisfactory solution. Being moved to another hotel wasn’t the issue. I was given accommodation clearly worse than what I had booked and paid for, despite it being called an upgrade. I strongly recommend future guests keep screenshots of the room description, facilities, and photos before arrival.

The room quality was disappointing. There was a water leak and a strong smell in the room, with an even worse smell in the bathroom, so we couldn’t stay there. No room for three was available when we asked to switch, and the staff offered to move us to another hotel in their chain at no charge. They handled the situation very well and were helpful, and the location was great. I was happy with the staff’s service, just not the room.

The hotel is in a fantastic spot in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, just steps from attractions, three minutes on foot from the famous Chinatown, and close to lots of good restaurants. But what made our stay unforgettable was how well the staff treated us. They put themselves in our shoes and arranged everything for us, making us feel like family. Most spoke excellent English, which was much easier than communicating at many other hotels in Vietnam. Madelise Amica isn’t a big hotel, but the service is outstanding. Max, the manager, made sure we felt cared for and gave us very helpful guidance. Everyone was enthusiastic about helping throughout our stay. I’ve been to over forty countries and stayed in countless five-star hotels, but I’ve never felt this kind of warmth and hospitality. I don’t usually write reviews, but I had to share my gratitude. Our group is still talking about coming back to Hanoi and seeing the staff again. They’ve become like friends to us. I truly felt looked after and enjoyed our time here. Thank you to all the staff, and I hope to see you again. I highly recommend it!

The staff were amazing, and the location right in the middle of the Old Quarter was very convenient. We spent most of our time out anyway. The hotel could really use a major renovation, though. There was a small ceiling leak in our toilet, and a burst pipe from the second floor once flooded the reception area.

There were lots of ants in the room, and every morning we had to shake out our clothes in case they’d crawled inside. Staff said the ants had come in because of rain, but it didn’t rain during our stay, and the ants were still there after we told them. The walls were so thin that our neighbour’s alarm woke us up. At arrival, we turned over a pillow and found a chunk of hair inside the pillowcase. We first thought it might be a squashed spider, but thankfully it wasn’t. We brought it to reception and asked for a new one. The worker said it was just hair, removed it, and handed the same pillow back. We checked in around 1:30 a.m. and understand the worker might have been tired, but that’s no excuse for not giving us a fresh pillow and pillowcase.
